DESCRIPTION:Part of our carbon footprint at Wekiva Island includes the carbon you release on your travel here and back home. \n  \nAs you are aware\, Wekiva Island counts the number of guests that visit during our peak times. Based on that information we have estimated that over 21\,000 vehicles visit us each year. We have estimated and calculated that the trips to and from here by those vehicles contribute to approximately 190 metric tons of carbon in our atmosphere. Your $1 admission fee in part helps us to pay to offset this carbon release.

SUMMARY:Watch The Swallow Tailed Kites
DESCRIPTION:Our most beautiful bird of prey\, striking in its shape\, its pattern\, and its extraordinarily graceful flight. Hanging motionless in the air\, swooping and gliding\, rolling upside down and then zooming high in the air with scarcely a motion of its wings\, the Swallow-tailed Kite is a joy to watch. At one time it was common in summer over much of the southeast\, but today it is found mostly in Florida and a few other areas of the deep south. \n  \n\n\n\n\nFeeding Behavior\nExtremely maneuverable in flight. Catches flying insects in the air. Takes much of its food by swooping low over trees or lower growth\, picking small creatures from the twigs or leaves without pausing. Young birds of other species are probably taken out of their nests. \nEggs\n2\, sometimes 1-3. Creamy white\, marked with dark brown. Incubation is by both parents\, about 28-31 days. Young: During first week after hatching\, young are brooded almost continuously by female. Male brings food to nest\, and female feeds it to young. After about 2-3 weeks\, female also may hunt and bring food to nest. Young may move about in nest tree after about 5 weeks\, first fly at about 5-6 weeks. \nYoung\nDuring first week after hatching\, young are brooded almost continuously by female. Especially when feeding young\, will capture many frogs\, lizards\, snakes\, nestling birds. In tropics\, also eats small fruits. \nNesting\nCourtship may involve aerial chases by both sexes; male may feed female. Nest site is in tall tree in open woodland\, usually in pine\, sometimes in cypress\, cottonwood\, or other tree. Typically places nest near top of one of the tallest trees available\, more than 60′ above ground. Nest (built by both sexes) is platform of small sticks\, lined with soft lichens and Spanish moss. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nMigration\nMigration is early in both spring and fall\, with Florida birds arriving February-March\, departing August-September. Some migrate around Gulf of Mexico but most Florida birds apparently cross Caribbean; their migration is poorly known.

DESCRIPTION:Rent one of our river-banas for the day and enjoy a private retreat area on the river. The smaller covered cabana is 12’x11’ in size and comes equipped with a comfortable couch and rocking chair. Cabinets and ice chests are available to house and secure any food and non -alcoholic beverage items that you bring for the day. A river-front front porch\, adorned with comfortable Adirondack chairs allows you to relax and watch the activities on the water. We have several different sizes to chose from. They do sell out on the weekends from March to September it is highly recommended that you book early! \nNo alcohol is ever allowed to be brought onto Wekiva Island or the Wekiva River. We do have a bar with beer and wine for sale\, any alcohol consumed at Wekiva Island must be purchased at Wekiva Island. FL Statute 562.02 \nFor the Cabana renter you are guaranteed a minimum of two parking spots near the Cabana for parking access. \nCabanas are rented from 9 AM to 5 PM daily. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:We love seeing River Otters play on the Wekiva River \n  \nSliding and wrestling\, belly flopping\, and somersaulting\, river otters really know how to play! They take advantage of any slippery slope for fun\, whether it’s a summer slide down a muddy hill or a winter thrill on snow and ice. They glide on their bellies with their front paws by their sides. River otters are aquatic mammals. \nThey generally live along rivers\, as their name implies\, but they’re also found near streams and lakes. Otters prefer water bordered by woods and with wetlands\, such as marshes\, nearby. Flexing their long bodies up and down\, paddling with their webbed hind feet\, and using their feet and strong tails to steer\, river otters are underwater acrobats. They can stay underwater for up to four minutes. \nAs they dive\, they close their ears and nostrils to keep water out. They hunt underwater\, skillfully chasing fish\, their main food. Otters grab their prey in their mouths. When the otters catch large fish\, they haul them onto shore to dine. \nWhile river otters spend most of their time in water\, they do travel across land as well—often in search of a mate. Otters even make their land travel look playful. They run a few steps and then slide on their bellies. Clearly\, otters know how to have fun!
