SUMMARY:Meet the 2019 Wekiva Paint Out Cover Artist!
DESCRIPTION:I have lived in Ormond Beach\, Florida\, with my wife\, Linda\, and our two dogs\, since 1999. I was born in Burbank\, California\, and raised in St. Petersburg\, Florida. Upon earning my four- year degree in commerical art from Hussian School of Art in Philadelphia\, I was recruited by Hallmark Cards. As a Hallmark artist\, I created flower settings and wildlife greeting cards. I later worked some 35 years as a graphic artist at various newspapers\, including the St. Petersburg Times\, where I was employed for fifteen years and where a large part of my responsibility was\nto illustrate the outdoors pages of the newspaper. \nMy artwork has been recognized throughout the United States. I was the winner of the State of Indiana upland bird contest with an acrylic painting of a wild turkey; had works selected for the Paint America National Gallery tour; designed the Florida bass fish automobile license tag; and was recently the over-all winner (June/July) for the Plein Air Magazine Salon Contest. My work is in many private and corporate collections\, including the Daytona Beach Museum of Arts and Sciences\, the Florida Game and Freshwater Fish Commission in Tallahassee\, the College of Central Florida\, Ocala\, and many others. \nWhile I take part in several favorite outdoor art shows each year\, I have evolved primarily into an avid plein air painter\, working solely in acrylics. I enjoy working in the Florida outdoors attempting to capture the mood and the ever-changing light that surrounds me. I also enjoy the many great conversations I have with people who stop by to view a painting in progress. In addition to my paintings\, I also create various bird and fish sculptures using wire and various finishes. \nWhen I’m not painting\, I enjoy the sport of falconry. This activity puts me in the heart of nature– my favorite place to be.

SUMMARY:Lets Talk Invasives
DESCRIPTION:What is an invasive species?\nAn invasive species is a non-native species (including seeds\, eggs\, spores\, or other propagules) whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic harm\, environmental harm\, or harm to human health. The term “invasive” is used for the most aggressive species. These species grow and reproduce rapidly\, causing major disturbance to the areas in which they are present. \n\nThings to know about invasive species:\nInvasive species\, if left uncontrolled\, can and will limit land use now and into the future. \nThe longer we ignore the problem the harder and more expensive the battle for control will become. \nInvasive species can decrease your ability to enjoy hunting\, fishing\, camping\, hiking\, boating and other outdoor recreational activities. \nThe United States suffers from $1.1-120 billion per year in economic losses due to exotic\, invasive species. \nApproximately 42% of Threatened or Endangered species are at risk due to non-native\, invasive species. \n\nSo\, What’s The Problem?\nIn their native ranges\, plants generally do not become a nuisance. Today\, with modern transportation\, many exotic plants have caught a free ride to Florida. Once here\, they are free from natural enemies that existed in their home range (animals that eat them\, plant diseases\, etc.)\, and can outgrow and replace Florida’s native plants. \nWhen invasive plants replace native plants:\n\nNative plants can be permanently eliminated\, diminishing Florida’s natural diversity;\nAnimals that use native plants are often unable to adapt\, so they may leave the area or die out;\nInvasive aquatic plants can completely fill and/or cover the water\, damaging habitat and diversity.\n\nWhy Should We Care?\nInvasive plants cost Floridians a lot of money; millions of taxpayer dollars are spent each year to control them. If not kept in check\, invasive plants can replace Florida’s native plants (some of them endangered or threatened)\, be toxic to wildlife and/ or people\, increase the severity of wildfires\, and alter ecosystems. Because some of them are aquatic\, they can also cause problems with irrigation\, navigation and flood control. Boating\, swimming\, hiking and other uses of natural areas can also be made difficult\, even dangerous\, by invasive plant infestations. \nKeeping Things Under Control\nAfter much research\, we know that some invasive plant species will never be eradicated in Florida; they simply reproduce too fast. That is why we strive to keep them at the lowest possible levels. Regular maintenance of invasive plants reduces overall environmental and economic damage and maintains habitat for native plants and animals. \nHelp Control Invasive Plants by Keeping Them Out of Your Landscape at Home\nPreventing the introduction and spread of invasive plants in Florida is the most effective and least expensive means of protecting Florida’s natural habitats. Here are a few things we can all do: \n\nVolunteer to help remove invasive plants in your area.\nSupport community efforts to ban invasive plants from newly developed landscaping.\nAsk your nursery or garden center for native and/or non-invasive plants when landscaping.\nDon’t move invasive plants to other areas and never empty your aquarium into a body of water\, not even a canal.\nAvoid chopping aquatic plants with boat propellers as some plant fragments can grow into even more plants.\nCheck clothing\, shoes\, and pets for seeds after hiking and remove them.\nRemove plant fragments from boats/trailers after use.\nWatch for and report invasive plants found in this park; note the location and tell a ranger.\nTake guided walks at state parks to learn about Florida’s native plants and animals.\n\n

SUMMARY:Why we cleanup!
DESCRIPTION:What is the most common trash collected during cleanups? \nRanked from most common to least common based off of the findings from the International Coastal Cleanup hosted by the Ocean Conservancy: \n\nCigarettes/Cigarette Filters – 1-5 years to biodegrade\nPlastic Food Wrapper/Containers – 20-30 years\nPlastic water bottles – 450 years\nPlastic bags – 10-20 years\nPlastic caps and lids – 450-1\,000 years\nPlastic utensils – 450 years\nPlastic straws and stirrers – up to 200 years\nGlass bottles – 1 million years (estimated\, exact time unknown)\nAluminum cans – 80-200 years\nPaper bags – 1 month\n\nPlastic water bottles were first created and commercially used in 1947. That means if a plastic water bottle was dropped into the ocean the very first year that plastic bottles were created\, it is still floating somewhere and will not be “completely gone” until the year 2397. Even then\, plastics do not completely decompose\, they become micro-plastics. Because of the many carbon-carbon bonds that are used in processing plastics to be as sturdy as they are\, the organisms responsible for breaking down organic compounds do not recognize these unnatural strong carbon-carbon bonds and therefore cannot break these compounds down.  \n

SUMMARY:What is Keep Seminole Beautiful?
DESCRIPTION:We are an organization dedicated to keeping our community clean. Road trash is our pet peeve and the area that needs the most attention. We are thinking – we have quit teaching our kids not to litter. That “someone” will pick it up. Trash on our roadways or in our waterways is harmful to our eco-system. We want to protect our precious eco-system! \nWe do two river clean ups each month. One on the north end of the Wekiva River out of Wekiva Falls (always the first Saturday of the month) and a second river clean up at Wekiva Island (usually the last Saturday of the month). In between we do a road clean up\, tree planting\, invasive removal or clean up at a local school that needs some attention! \nThe Wekiva River\, one of Florida’s two Wild & Scenic Rivers and an Aquatic Preserve. Rent a canoe\, kayak or paddle board and float down the river. If you take it in then bring it back out. Don’t leave your trash on the river to harm our precious wild life.
