SUMMARY:How Stormwater Affects Rivers
DESCRIPTION:HOW STORMWATER AFFECTS YOUR RIVERS\n\n\n\n  \n\n\nRivers are dependent on their surrounding lands (known as the watershed) for a consistent supply of clean water. Altering a watershed does many things; one of the most significant is to alter the way stormwater soaks into the ground or flows to the local river. \nWhen managed properly\, this water is a valuable resource. However\, when stormwater is managed like a waste product\, it exacerbates flooding and becomes contaminated with pollutants. \nWHAT IS STORMWATER?\nStormwater (or polluted runoff) is rain or melting snow that flows over the ground. In urban or developed areas\, stormwater runs over pavement and parking lots\, picking up oil and other pollutants before flowing into a nearby river or stream. In more natural areas including forests and wetlands\, stormwater can soak into the ground\, or be stored and filtered. \nWHAT ARE THE IMPACTS OF “IMPERVIOUS SURFACES”?\nStormwater flooding a street in Washington\, DC\nImpervious surfaces such as roads\, parking lots\, and roofs associated with sprawling urban development significantly change natural river flow patterns and the recharge of underground water supplies. \nRainfall cannot soak into the ground through these surfaces and thus does not replenish groundwater supplies. Impervious surfaces also increase the amount and speed of water entering rivers and other water bodies. \nThe result is an increase in the severity and frequency of floods\, the displacement and destruction of habitat for fish and other water dependent species\, and a decrease in base flows in our streams and water in our aquifers. \nWHAT ARE THE HEALTH IMPACTS OF POLLUTION?\nUrbanization has fundamentally altered the way that water moves through the landscape. When rainwater can’t soak into the ground\, it runs along streets and parking lots and picks up pollutants. \nThis polluted runoff can flow into our rivers and streams\, or overwhelm local infrastructure to cause sewage overflows. \nStormwater outfall gushing water into the local river\nThe public health and environmental implications of sewage overflows are tremendous. \nSewage pollutes our waters with pathogens\, excess nutrients\, heavy metals\, and other toxins. \nIt kills aquatic life and creates algal blooms that can suffocate fisheries. Sewage carries pathogens that can end up in our drinking water supplies and swimming areas. These disease-causing microorganisms cause diarrhea\, vomiting\, respiratory\, and other infections\, hepatitis\, dysentery\, and other diseases. \nHOW SHOULD WE MANAGE STORMWATER?\nTraditionally\, our water infrastructure— such as storm drains and culverts — has treated precipitation as something to dispose of rather than something to protect. This infrastructure channels rainfall and snowmelt into storm drains and pipes\, and dumps it into receiving waters\, often far from its place of origin. The consequences are the loss of groundwater recharge\, reduced base flows in streams\, increased flooding\, and lower water quality. \nInstead of channeling stormwater into pipes and drains\, a more natural method of water management has benefits for the environment and economy. \nNatural stormwater management refers to management approaches that accomplish one of three things: \n\nUse soil and vegetation in a constructed technique\, such as rain gardens or green roofs\, to mimic natural hydrologic processes like percolation through soil and plant uptake and transpiration.\nPreserve natural features\, such as floodplains with a natural vegetation buffer along streams that can slow\, filter\, and store polluted runoff.\nMinimize or disconnect impervious surfaces (such as pavement)\, using methods such as rain barrels\, narrower streets and permeable paving.\n\nThough these approaches are not as “natural” as other techniques\, they still protect the natural water cycle by slowing or infiltrating precipitation rather than sending it directly into storm sewers or nearby streams. \nThese approaches\, when used properly\, help maintain a more natural watershed\, which in turn keeps our rivers clean and our communities healthy. \nTHE BENEFITS OF GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE\nGreen infrastructure solutions (such as permeable pavement\, green roofs\, and rain gardens) reduce the stormwater runoff that flows into sewer systems and triggers sewage overflows. Green infrastructure practices make cities act more like forests by capturing rainwater where it falls\, filtering out pollutants and reducing large volumes of runoff. \nFrom rain gardens to green roofs\, green infrastructure practices decrease pollutant loadings into waters\, which can reduce illness from recreational contact or polluted drinking water. Green infrastructure solutions can also improve air quality and mitigate the urban heat island effect to lower heat stress related fatalities. Green infrastructure can mitigate localized flooding. These practices improve access to healthy and affordable food when combined with urban agriculture strategies and to green space for recreation. \nThese solutions are cost-effective. Oregon’s Museum of Science and Industry re-designed its parking lots to minimize stormwater runoff and maximize local infiltration of rainwater. OMSI’s parking lot now has capacity to infiltrate almost .5 inches of rainfall every time it rains\, and construction costs fell $78\,000. \nLocal governments can reconfigure traditional stormwater infrastructure to increase infiltration. For example\, the City of Seattle reduced runoff by 97 percent the year after converting an open ditch stormwater drain to an attractive roadside swale garden\, decreasing the width of the adjacent street and planting native vegetation. \nSOLUTIONS FOR THE FUTURE\nOne of the biggest challenges of climate change is the uncertainty and expense it is imposing on communities and businesses. Among the greatest appeals of green infrastructure is the fact that it is cost-effective and reliable – saving money and bringing a much greater degree of certainty and stability to planning processes and investment decisions. \nThat is why many forward-looking cities are already embracing green infrastructure\, including New York\, Chicago\, Portland\, Seattle\, San Francisco\, Minneapolis-St. Paul\, Milwaukee\, Kansas City\, Toledo\, Cincinnati\, and Philadelphia. \nThe investments we make today are ones we will live with for decades and possibly centuries to come. American Rivers is ensuring our leaders make the right decisions for rivers\, clean water\, and communities and that green solutions become the preferred way to ensure the health and well-being of our children and grandchildren. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Alligators Speak?
DESCRIPTION:Alligators are capable of communication.\nThey are vocal animals that growl\, yelp\, hiss\, bellow\, and head slap the water to get their point across. Alligators are considered the most vocal of all crocodilians as they begin chirping before they even hatch. To lure females\, male will produce infrasonic vibrations below the water\, pulses that can travel a remarkable distance (in the picture below\, you can see the water rippling along his back). To avoid fighting and potential injury\, males settle most disputes by head-slapping the water\, marking their territory. Because of their ability to communicate\, large groups of alligators will sometimes share the same territory\, using their own language to sort out the hierarchy.

SUMMARY:World Water Day
DESCRIPTION:World Water Day\nOn March 22\, World Water Day focuses our attention on the Earth’s most vital resource.  Ensuring clean water sources for all the world’s inhabitants is the goal of World Water Day. \nWorld Water Day is the chance to remind ourselves that billions of people to this day live their lives without access to safe drinking water. As a fundamental human right\, it is our job to conserve the water we do have as well as ensure access to those who need it. \nAs many different groups are overlooked when it comes to providing access to Earth’s most precious resource\, the United Nations has taken the stance that “water services must meet the needs of marginalized groups and their voices must be heard in the decision-making process.” \nIn order to guarantee no one is left behind\, it is our job to educate ourselves on the laws and regulations that surround our water usage. The water challenges we face vary region to region. By better understanding the challenges we face in conserving water\, the more prepared we’ll be to supply water in the future. \nHOW TO OBSERVE \nTry this: Pour yourself a glass of water and stare at it closely. Take a moment to appreciate it. When you’re ready\, take a sip and feel how your body willingly accepts it. Be gracious for this experience and acknowledge the fact there are people on this very day who cannot enjoy the same privilege. Finally\, pledge your support in making sure that everyone may have access to fresh water in the near future! \nCome together as a community and see how we can save water together. Go to worldwaterday.org/events and see what events are happening near you. \nGet the conversation going and share your ideas on how we can provide clean water for everyone. Visit www.worldwaterday.com to find out how you can help improve the world’s water supply.  Use #WorldWaterDay to share on social media. \nHISTORY \nIn 1993 the first World Water Day was observed. The event was initially proposed at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in December 1992. Each year there has been a theme associated with World Water Day to provide a cohesive mission and single-pointed focus.

SUMMARY:What is LEED?
DESCRIPTION:Have you seen the LEED Certification on our Schoolhouse Building?\nWe are proud to have a LEED Platinum Building here at Wekiva Island!\n\nWhat is LEED?\nLEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally recognized green building certification system\,  providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings\, water efficiency\, CO2 emissions reduction\, improved indoor environmental quality\, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts. \nDeveloped by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC)\, LEED provides building owners and operators a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design\, construction\, operations and maintenance solutions. \nLEED is flexible enough to apply to all building types – commercial as well as residential. It works throughout the building lifecycle – design and construction\, operations and maintenance\, tenant fitout\, and significant retrofit. And LEED for Neighborhood Development extends the benefits of LEED beyond the building footprint into the neighborhood it serves. \nLEED provides a point system to score green building design and construction. The system is categorized in five basic areas: Sustainable Sites\, Water Efficiency\, Energy and Atmosphere\, Materials and Resources\, and Indoor Environmental Quality. Buildings are awarded points based on the extent various sustainable strategies are achieved. The more points awarded the higher the level of certification achieved from Certified\, Silver\, Gold\, to Platinum.

SUMMARY:Keeping Your Rivers Clean
DESCRIPTION:HOW SEWAGE POLLUTION ENDS UP IN RIVERS\n\n\n \n\n\n3.5 MILLION AMERICANS GET SICK EACH YEAR AFTER SWIMMING\, BOATING\, FISHING\, OR OTHERWISE TOUCHING WATER THEY THOUGHT WAS SAFE.\nWhere does human waste mingle with household chemicals\, personal hygiene products\, pharmaceuticals\, and everything else that goes down the drains in American homes and businesses? \nIn sewers. \nAnd what can you get when rain\, pesticides\, fertilizers\, automotive chemicals\, and trash run off the streets and down the gutters into those very same sewers? Sewage backing up into people’s basements. Sewage spilling onto streets and parks. Sewage pouring into rivers and streams. \nEach year\, more than 860 billion gallons of this vile brew escapes sewer systems across the country. That’s enough to flood all of Pennsylvania ankle-deep. It’s enough for every American to take one bath each week for an entire year. \nAfter bursting out of a pipe or manhole cover\, this foul slurry pollutes the nearest body of water. Downstream\, some of it may be pumped out\, treated\, and piped into more homes and businesses. From there\, it goes back into a sewer system\, and the cycle resumes. \nA THREAT TO HUMAN HEALTH\nUntreated human sewage teems with salmonella\, hepatitis\, dysentery\, cryptosporidium\, and many other infectious diseases. \nCanal polluted by raw sewage\nOne hundred years ago\, epidemics of these diseases helped limit the life expectancy of a U.S. citizen to about 50 years. Estimates vary for how many people sewage still sickens or kills each year\, but they are all large. \nGerms linger even after the stench of sewage has dispersed. Healthy adults may never realize that yesterday’s swim caused today’s cough\, diarrhea\, or ear infection. Young children\, their grandparents\, and people already weakened by illness are more likely to become seriously ill or die. Scientists believe as many as 3.5 million Americans get sick each year after swimming\, boating\, fishing\, or otherwise touching water they thought was safe. \nA 1998 study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology blamed water pollution for one-third of all reported gastroenteritis cases and two-thirds of all ear infections. It’s not just the people who play in and around the water who are at risk. Between 1985 and 2000\, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) documented 251 separate disease outbreaks and nearly half a million cases of waterborne illness from polluted drinking water in the United States. Another study by the CDC and the National Academy of Sciences concluded that most illnesses caused by eating tainted seafood have human sewage as the root cause. \nOUTDATED TREATMENT PLANTS\nTo understand why this is happening\, it’s helpful to know some history. For centuries most American sewage poured into the nearest river or creek with little or no treatment\, and few people gave it a second thought. \nOld wastewater treatment plant\nThat changed when Congress passed the Clean Water Act in 1972 and the federal government began making significant investments to modernize sewage treatment infrastructure serving communities across the country. \nToday\, many of the plants built with that initial investment are undersized or are near the end of their effective lives. \nThere are 600\,000 miles of sewer pipes across the country and the average age is 33 years. Some pipes in cities along the eastern seaboard are nearly 200 years old. Some are even made of wood. The American Society of Civil Engineers has given America’s wastewater infrastructure a “D” grade overall. \nRUNAWAY DEVELOPMENT\nToday\, poorly planned development compounds the problem of aging infrastructure. As urban areas sprawl into the countryside\, new expanses of concrete and asphalt increase the amount of stormwater surging into sewers — and the amount of pollution spewing out. \nA single acre of wetlands can hold up to 1.5 million gallons of rain or melting snow. Otherwise it winds up in the sewer system.\nTrees help keep water out of sewer systems\, too. In fact\, the group American Forests estimates that as Washington\, D.C.’s tree canopy thinned by 43 percent between 1973 and 1997\, the amount of stormwater running into the city’s aging sewer system increased by 34 percent.Older sewage systems combine stormwater with household sewage\, but even in systems where they are separated some stormwater ends up in the sewer\, where it contributes to raw sewage overflows. \nSOLUTIONS\nAll people deserve clean water free of the many dangerous pollutants found in sewage. The only way to ensure this is to stop sewage overflows and leaks and ensure that no sewage is released into our streams\, rivers\, and lakes untreated. It will cost hundreds of billions of dollars and take decades to update the nation’s wastewater infrastructure to this level. \nStreet-side swale and adjacent pervious concrete sidewalk in Seattle\, US. Stormwater is filtered through these features into soil\, reducing the runoff into city sewers.\nBut it isn’t enough to simply invest more. Protecting and expanding natural areas helps prevent stormwater from rushing into the sewer in the first place — stopping sewer overflows before they start. \nThat’s investing smarter. \nIn fact\, planting trees\, restoring wetlands\, and creating green roofs are often the most cost-effective ways to expand the capacity of sewer systems. \nA single mature tree with a thirty-foot crown can keep 4\,600 gallons of water out of the sewer each year. For less than $300\,000\, it’s possible to construct an artificial wetland that can intercept 3.25 million gallons of stormwater otherwise destined for the sewer. \nIn June 2003\, Ford Motor Company planted ten acres of vegetation on the roof of its Dearborn\, MI truck factory\, keeping as many as four million gallons of rain out of the sewer system each year. Projects like these prevent sewage overflows as surely as bigger pipes — and cost less. \nUntil we make significant progress towards reducing sewage in our water\, there must be strong notification programs that will alert people when there is a danger of contacting raw sewage. Wastewater facilities should be required to notify the media\, citizens\, and environmental agencies when they release untreated sewage into the environment. American Rivers works for federal and state right-to-know policies that require citizens to be informed of sewage contamination in their waterways. Not only will such programs keep people healthy by avoiding raw sewage\, but it will also galvanize further support for solutions to reduce sewage pollution. \nClean water. It’s essential. It’s irreplaceable. If Americans today want our children and grandchildren to splash along the shore at sunset or drink from the faucet without worry\, then it’s time for us to act. It’s time to make the commitment to keep raw sewage out of our water.
