Things really picked up for her and her band Cat Ridgeway & the Tourists last year when they won a contest and got to open the main stage at Okeechobee Music and Arts Festival for Arcade Fire\, Leon Bridges\, Local Natives\, Trombone Shorty\, and Lil Dicky. Since then\, she has played shows and festivals all over the Southeast\, sharing bills with the likes of Brandi Carlile\, Jason Isbell\, Jeffrey Steele\, Dan Wilson (of Semisonic)\, and many more. Cat has also played stages such as the House of Blues Orlando and offered support for national acts such as the Indigo Girls and Rock & Roll Hall-of-Famer Marty Balin (Jefferson Airplane/Starship). \nIn addition to being a killer live performer\, Cat is a seasoned multi-instrumentalist and recording artist. In \n\n\n\n\n\n\n2016\, indie rock duo Tegan and Sara personally selected Cat as the winner of their worldwide cover contest after being impressed by her prowess across 5 different instruments. Throughout her career\, she has had the privilege of working in the studio with producers such as Greg Rike (Deep Purple\, Little Feat\, Backstreet Boys) and Billy Chapin (Don Henley\, Sister Hazel\, Backstreet Boys)\, and players such as Gordon Kennedy (co-writer of Eric Clapton’s “Change the World”) and Gregg Allman’s horn section. Her song “Drift” was recently licensed by Nemour’s Children’s Health Systems for a national commercial. She is also highly sought after to record radio jingles and has leant her voice to many notable causes including Tunes for Tots\, Make a Wish Foundation\, and Hospice of the Comforter. \n Cat is in love with every aspect of being an artist\, but everyone (including herself) agrees that live performance is where she really shines. DESCRIPTION:Did you know that according to the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) recyclable post-consumer packing with an estimated value of $11.4 billion is land-filled in the United States each year instead of being recycled?\nDid you also know that 80% of that trash that is in our landfills is recyclable?\nMany people think that after a few years the trash that has made its way to the ocean\, either intentionally or unintentionally\, will break down and decompose. Unfortunately\, this is not the case for almost all ocean debris.\nAccording to the Mote Marine Lab in Sarasota\, Florida\, it is estimated that one glass bottle alone takes 1 million years to decompose. However\, it is undetermined the exact time it takes glass to break down due to its significantly long decomposition rate.\n\n  \nWhat is the most common trash collected during cleanups? \n\nRanked from most common to least common based off of the findings from the International Coastal Cleanup hosted by the Ocean Conservancy:\nCigarettes/Cigarette Filters – 1-5 years to biodegrade\nPlastic Food Wrapper/Containers – 20-30 years\nPlastic water bottles – 450 years\nPlastic bags – 10-20 years\nPlastic caps and lids – 450-1\,000 years\nPlastic utensils – 450 years\nPlastic straws and stirrers – up to 200 years\nGlass bottles – 1 million years (estimated\, exact time unknown)\nAluminum cans – 80-200 years\nPaper bags – 1 month\nPlastic water bottles were first created and commercially used in 1947.\nThat means if a plastic water bottle was dropped into the ocean the very first year that plastic bottles were created\, it is still floating somewhere and will not be “completely gone” until the year 2397.\nEven then\, plastics do not completely decompose\, they become micro-plastics. Because of the many carbon-carbon bonds that are used in processing plastics to be as sturdy as they are\, the organisms responsible for breaking down organic compounds do not recognize these unnatural strong carbon-carbon bonds and therefore cannot break these compounds down.\n\n

SUMMARY:Wekiwa Springs History
DESCRIPTION:Wekiwa Springs State Park\n\n\n\nClay Springs Boathouse\, Circa 1880\nThis area was known as Clay Springs until 1906\, when the name was changed to Wekiwa Springs. Forty-two million gallons of crystal clear water flow each day from Wekiwa Springs into Wekiwa Springs Run. The run joins with Rock Springs Run to form the beautiful upper Wekiva River. Creeks\, later called Seminoles\, are the most recent Native Americans to have lived here. Wekiwa means ‘spring of water’ and Wekiva means ‘flowing water’ in the Creek language.  Recreational activities have always been a part of the area which had several structures near the Spring. The largest and most prominent structure was the bathhouse\, where swimmers would change into their swimsuits. In an attempt to draw northerners to the area and promote tourism\, the springs were touted as medicinal waters that would cure an assortment of ailments. \nThe Apopka Sportsman Club bought the land that is presently Wekiwa Springs State Park in 1941 from the Wilson Cypress Company\, which logged the land for hardwoods\, in addition to cypress and pine. The Apopka Sportsman Club used the land for hunting and fishing until 1969 when they sold it to the state of Florida to become Wekiwa Springs State Park. The club built several hunting cabins on the property\, most of which are no longer in existence\, but have been turned into primitive camping sites. One cabin remains and currently serves as a ranger residence. \nThe Florida Park Service Ranger Academy is a bi-annual training that is aimed at teaching all new park rangers about the mission of the Florida Park Service. The first Ranger Academy was held at O’Leno State Park in 1972. In 1977\, Ranger Academy was moved to Wekiwa Springs State Park\, where it has been held ever since. \n\nGraduates of the first Florida Park Service Ranger Academy\, circa 1972\nThe National Wild and Scenic Rivers System was created by Congress in 1968 and signed into law by Lyndon Johnson on the 2nd of October to preserve certain rivers with outstanding natural\, cultural\, and recreational values in a free-flowing condition for the enjoyment of present and future generations. The Act is notable for safeguarding the special character of these rivers\, while also recognizing the potential for their appropriate use and development. It encourages river management that crosses political boundaries and promotes public participation in developing goals for river protection. \nThe Wekiva River from its confluence with the St. Johns River to Wekiwa Springs\, Rock Springs Run from its headwaters at Rock Springs to the confluence with the Wekiwa Springs Run and the Blackwater Creek from the outflow of Lake Norris to the confluence with the Wekiva River were protected under the Act.
