SUMMARY:Wild and Scenic Designation
DESCRIPTION:The Wekiva River together with Wekiwa Springs Run\, Rock Springs Run and Black Water Creek were designated by the United States Congress as a National Wild and Scenic River in October 2000\, per Public Law 106-299 Wekiva Wild and Scenic River Act of 2000\, amendment to Public Law 90-542 Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968. The Act requires that a comprehensive management plan and Environmental Assessment be developed to serve as the basis for protecting a designated river’s values and ensures the river will be protected in perpetuity for future generations to enjoy. The Wekiva Wild and Scenic River System Management Plan was developed by the Wekiva River System Advisory Management Committee (AMC) in collaboration with the National Park Service (NPS) to fulfill this enabling legislation requirement.

SUMMARY:The Anatomy Of A River
DESCRIPTION:THE UNITED STATES HAS MORE THAN  2.9 MILLION MILES OF RIVERS.\nThey range from small streams and wetlands to large waterways.  No two of these rivers are the same. Each river is unique to its landscape\, winding through low foothills and valleys\, rushing clear and cold from mountain forests\, or sweeping warm and muddy down desert canyons. \nANATOMY OF A RIVER\nNo matter how different our rivers are\, all rivers share some basic anatomy features. \nWhat parts make up a river?\nTRIBUTARIES\nA tributary is a river that feeds into another river\, rather than ending in a lake\, pond\, or ocean. \nIf a river is large\, there’s a good chance that much of its water comes from tributaries. How do geographers decide which river is the “main” river and which is the “tributary” when they’re naming rivers?  Usually the bigger river gets to be the “main” river\, but sometimes history or other factors come into play. \nUP AND DOWN\, RIGHT AND LEFT\nDownstream always points to the end of a river\, or its “mouth.” “Upstream” always points to the river’s source\, or “headwaters.” As you look downstream\, your right hand corresponds to “River Right.” Your left hand corresponds to “River Left.” As in\, “Hey\, river cleanup volunteers – here’s a nasty tire downstream on River Left! Let’s go get it!” \nHEADWATERS\nThe beginning of a river is called its headwaters. Even if a river becomes big and powerful\, its headwaters often don’t start out that way. Some headwaters are springs that come from under the ground. Others are marshy areas fed by mountain snow. A river’s headwaters can be huge\, with thousands of small streams that flow together\, or just a trickle from a lake or pond. What happens in the headwaters is very important to the health of the whole river\, because anything that happens upstream affects everything downstream. \nCHANNEL\nThe shape of a river channel depends on how much water has been flowing in it for how long\, over what kinds of soil or rock\, and through what vegetation. There are many different kinds of river channels – some are wide and constantly changing\, some crisscross like a braid\, and others stay in one main channel between steep banks. The bends in a river called “meanders” are caused by the water taking away soil on the outside of a river bend and laying it down the inside of a river bend over time.  Each kind of river channel has unique benefits to the environment. \nRIVERBANK\nThe land next to the river is called the riverbank\, and the streamside trees and other vegetation is sometimes called the “riparian zone.”  This is an important\, nutrient-rich area for wildlife\, replenished by the river when it floods. In the West\, these riverside areas provide habitat for more bird species than all other vegetation combined. These areas also provide valuable services like protection from erosion during floods\, and filtering polluted run-off from cities and farms. \nFLOODPLAINS\nFloodplains are low\, flat areas next to rivers\, lakes and coastal waters that periodically flood when the water is high. The animals and plants that live in a floodplain often need floods to survive and reproduce. Healthy floodplains benefit communities by absorbing floodwaters that would otherwise rush downstream\, threatening people and property. It has been estimated that restoring the 100-year flood zone of the five-state Upper Mississippi River Basin could store 39 million acre-feet of floodwaters — the same volume that caused the Great Flood of 1993 — and save over $16 billion in flood damage costs. \nMOUTH/DELTA\nThe end of a river is its mouth\, or delta. At a river’s delta\, the land flattens out and the water loses speed\, spreading into a fan shape. Usually this happens when the river meets an ocean\, lake\, or wetland. As the river slows and spreads out\, it can no longer transport all of the sand and sediment it has picked up along its journey from the headwaters. Because these materials and nutrients help build fertile farmland\, deltas have been called “cradles” of human civilization. Deltas are “cradles” for other animals as well\, providing breeding and nesting grounds for hundreds of species of fish and birds. \nWETLANDS\nWetlands are lands that are soaked with water from nearby lakes\, rivers\, oceans\, or underground springs. Some wetlands stay soggy all year\, while others dry out. Although wetlands are best known for providing habitat to a wide variety of plants and animals\, they also help protect our communities by acting as natural sponges\, storing and slowly releasing floodwaters. A single acre of wetland\, saturated to a depth of one foot\, will retain 330\,000 gallons of water – enough to flood thirteen average-sized homes thigh-deep.  Wetlands also help provide clean water by naturally filtering out pollution. \nFLOW\n“Flow” refers to the water running in a river or stream. There are two important aspects to a river’s natural flow. First\, there is the amount of water that flows in the river. Some rivers get enough water from their headwaters\, tributaries\, and rain to flow all year round. Others go from cold\, raging rivers to small\, warm streams as the snowpack runs out\, or even stop flowing completely. A river’s natural ups and downs are called “pulses.” Like a human being’s pulse\, a river’s natural flow of water is life support for animals\, plants\, and fish\, delivering what they need to survive at the right times. When we divert water away from a river\, we change the river’s natural flow. \nThe second component of natural flow is how water moves through a river’s channel. In a natural\, wild river\, the water runs freely. But in more developed or degraded rivers\, dams and other structures can slow or stop a river’s flow.  When a river’s flow is blocked\, migratory fish like salmon can suffer\, unable to move up or downstream.Th

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:The Advantages of Solar Power Can Bring Peace of Mind for Years to Come\nSolar energy technology has been around for decades. Solar offers a free\, reliable source  of power to run a wide range of devices\, from radios and wristwatches to powering your home. However\, many of us remain unclear about the advantages of solar power over other\, nonrenewable energy sources. \nSunrun is here to help you understand how solar can help you save on home energy costs. With Sunrun\, you can choose to only pay for the solar power\, not the solar panels\, or you can also buy out your system. As you weigh decisions about how to power your home\, consider five of the major advantages of solar power. \n5 Key Advantages to Solar Power:\n1. It saves on electric bills\nIf you’re facing rising electrical costs\, solar-powered electricity can offer you a cost-saving alternative. It also eliminates your dependence on your local utility company. Are you wondering if these panels work on cloudy days? No worries; the sun still emits energy through clear and cloudy skies. Solar power offers year-round efficiency and savings\, even in colder climates. Depending on the size of the system\, its efficiency and the how your home faces the sun\, some solar panels actually generate more electricity than your home consumes. This could decrease your monthly electric bill to zero. You can actually qualify for a rebate if your solar power system produces excess electricity. This depends on the area you live in\, so check with your area’s solar power guidelines. \n2. It qualifies for tax breaks\nSolar energy panels are become increasingly more affordable for homeowners through federal\, state and local tax breaks. In 2016\, homeowners were allowed to claim 30 percent of the cost of installing a new solar system in their home as a tax credit when they purchased a solar system. Taking these tax incentives into account\, it’s possible to recover all of your installation and equipment costs within five to 10 years\, according to National Geographic. \n3. Cost of going solar has dropped\nThe cost of solar power has dropped dramatically in recent years. Many homeowners who are planning to sell in a few years\, could make a smart investment by retrofitting with solar panels today. Panels require almost no maintenance\, since there are no moving parts to break down. Plus\, newly designed solar panels have slimmer profiles and sleek trims that blend much more seamlessly with traditional roofs. \n4. It benefits the environment\nGlobal climate change is a growing concern. Solar power reduces reliance on fossil fuels such as oil\, coal and natural gas. When fossil fuels are used to create electricity\, they produce harmful gas emissions that affect the safety of air\, water and soil. In contrast\, solar energy produces no pollution. The sun’s power offers an unlimited source of energy that does not strip the landscape or harm the ozone layer. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends switching to renewable energy sources – since these systems emit lower carbon emissions. Solar energy systems represent an investment in the future of the planet\, conserving non-sustainable energy sources and protecting the environment for the next generation. \n5. It increases fuel independence\nDomestic oil reserves continue to decline\, so alternative energy sources are becoming more important than ever. Solar power reduces the nation’s critical reliance on foreign oil\, which is subject to dramatic cost fluctuations\, and diminishes the risk of power shortages caused by disruptions in overseas oil supplies. Because solar power offers clear benefits over conventional power sources\, more and more homeowners are making the switch to this clean\, safe and affordable energy source every year.

SUMMARY:Water Efficiency and Conservation
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\nACCOMPLISHING MORE WITH LESS\nWater efficiency accomplishes more with less by using the best available technology and using water in smarter and more innovative ways. Water efficiency is different from water conservation which\, while also important\, is generally more focused on changing behavior and habits like turning off the tap while brushing your teeth. \nWater efficiency isn’t about asking citizens to shower once a week or plant a cactus in the front yard. Water efficiency is about flushing high-efficiency toilets and growing your trees and flowers with rainwater or gray water instead of high quality drinking water. It is about sustaining a high quality of life. It is about using innovative and smart technology to use less water to accomplish the same work. \nWater efficiency is simply the most cost-effective and immediate way to ensure safe\, clean and available water for our families\, neighbors and businesses. \nSAVE WATER\, SAVE ENERGY\nIt is important to note that saving water in turn conserves energy. The treating\, transporting\, and heating of water all take some form of either electricity or gas power\, and those costs translate to rising rates on utility bills. According to the Alliance for Water Efficiency\, heating the water in your home uses approximately 15 percent of household energy\, and a third of the water we use is hot\, so re-thinking the way we use (and waste) our water could account for significant savings on more than just water bills. \nCOMMUNITIES AND WATER EFFICIENCY\nIncreasingly\, water-efficiency practices are being adopted by communities and businesses as they recognize that improvements in infrastructure can account for big economic savings. Here are four examples of water-efficient cities: \nBOSTON\, MASSACHUSETTS\nStarting in the 1980’s\, Boston successfully secured its needed water supply by reducing consumption from the 1980 peak of 125.5 billion gallons to 70.9 billion gallons in 2009\, a 43% reduction. \nThe city spent $40 million dollars\, but avoided $500 million dollars in costs by choosing to reduce their demand instead of increasing supplies. This was done using simple techniques such as repairing leaks\, requiring low-flow toilets in new construction\, and retrofitting homes with efficient plumbing fixtures. \nTUCSON\, ARIZONA\nThe city of Tucson has dramatically reduced residential water usage during the past 18 years; from a high of 121 gallons per capita per day in 1996\, to only 86 in 2014.  This is a reduction of 35 GPCD\, or 28.9%\, over 18 years. \nThe city of Tucson has been proactive in encouraging water conservation by offering a wide range of rebates and incentive programs to residential and commercial customers. Their mascot and spokesduck\, Pete the Beak\, has been encouraging children and adults to save water for decades. \nDENVER\, COLORADO\nDenver’s water use in 2014 was equal to that of 1973\, when there were 350\,000 fewer people. Denver residents use 82 GPCD for all indoor and outdoor purposes\, utility data show\, down from 104 GPCD in 2001. This was achieved through measures such as replacing thousands of toilets in Denver Public Schools\, the ceaseless “Use Only What You Need” campaign\, rebates on water- saving appliances\, tiered water rates\, and summer watering restrictions. In 2015\, Denver Water leaders set a new target for 1.3 million customers: 30 gallons a day for indoor use. \nSANTA BARBARA\, CALIFORNIA\nIn the wake of the California drought\, the City of Santa Barbara has reduced their water consumption by 35.3% since 2013\, far surpassing the conservation standard of 12% set by the State Water Resource Control Board. \nTheir approach has included multiple water rate increases\, public outreach and education campaigns\, increased leak detection\, residential check-ups\, and rebates for water-efficient plumbing. Additionally\, they recently hosted a Water Conservation Summit\, are actively celebrating ‘Water Heroes’ in the community\, and even provide a webpage for anonymous water waste reporting. \nWATER EFFICIENCY IN THE SOUTHEAST: A “HIDDEN RESERVOIR”\nThe Southeast United States faces unprecedented challenges to its water supply. Growing populations and the impacts of climate change are putting new strains on communities and their rivers. Our local leaders are facing the pressing question of how to ensure a clean\, reliable water supply for current and future generations. \nTraditionally\, building more dams and reservoirs was the first and only answer to water supply problems. But these 19th century approaches should not be the primary solutions for our new 21st century challenges. They don’t address the root problem — water is finite and we are not using the water we do have wisely. \nRelying solely on building large new dams is not cost-effective and it won’t solve today’s water needs. Per gallon\, dams cost up to 8500 times more than water efficiency investments. Dams are fixed in one place and hold a limited amount of water. Even when we do get sufficient rains to fill reservoirs\, these giant pools can lose tremendous amounts of water through evaporation. \nFor these reasons\, building new dams should be the absolute last alternative for solving our water supply needs. “Hidden Reservoir\,” a report by American Rivers\, makes the case that water efficiency is our best source of affordable water and must be the backbone of water supply planning. By implementing the nine water efficiency policies outlined in this report\, communities across the Southeast can secure cost-effective and timely water supply. Read the report \nSOLUTIONS\nAmerican Rivers advocates at the national\, state and local levels for water efficiency and low impact supply solutions that provide cheaper\, faster\, and more reliable water than costly and harmful new dams and other short-sighted water storage projects. And we work to protect the water flowing in rivers\, so that it can continue to nourish our communities for years to come. \nHOW YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE AT HOME\nFix leaks inside and outside of your house. A one-drop-per-second leak can add up to as much as 2\,700 gallons of water wasted in a year. \nUse rain or gray water to grow the plants in your yard\, rather than using high-quality potable water. \nReplace old equipment like toilets\, faucets\, dishwashers and washing machines with high-efficiency\, Energy Star and WaterSense-labeled appliances. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists rebate programs by state available to help defray the cost of new appliances\, and you can discover your potential savings here. \n\n\n\n
