SUMMARY:Pharmaceuticals in rivers?
DESCRIPTION:In recent years there has been mounting concern about the presence of chemicals from pharmaceuticals and personal care products\, such as cosmetics\, in the nation’s streams and rivers. \nThere is no question that these chemicals are present in the nation’s waterways. The USGS conducted the first major investigation in 2002 and found\, on average\, seven chemical compounds in the streams they surveyed. \nPharmaceuticals in our water supply. Our bodies release them when we urinate or flush old drugs down the toilet.\nIn 2008\, the Associated Press found an array of pharmaceuticals\, from pain killers to antibiotics to mood stabilizers\, in the drinking water of 24 major metropolitan water suppliers. Further\, 34 of the 62 water suppliers contacted by the AP couldn’t provide results as they had never tested for pharmaceutical compounds. \nThis problem won’t go away anytime soon. \nAmerican drug consumption has increased rapidly in recent years\, and Americans fill 3.7 billion prescriptions every year. The chemicals in these drugs end up in waterways after being excreted from the body or when unused medication is flushed down the toilet. \nMost municipal sewage treatment facilities do not remove the pharmaceutical compounds from your water\, and major upgrades would be required to do so. The federal government hasn’t stepped in to require testing or set safety limits\, leaving many questions unanswered. \nHOW DOES THIS IMPACT MY HEALTH?\nPharmaceutical compounds are found at much lower concentrations in rivers and streams than the normally prescribed doses\, but there is concern that chronic exposure to numerous compounds could cause serious health problems and that compounds can act synergistically to cause adverse health effects. \nOf particular concern is the presence of endocrine disruptors\, which come from a variety of agricultural\, industrial\, and domestic sources\, including pharmaceuticals. \nThese compounds disrupt internal biological processes such as development\, growth\, and reproduction that are regulated by hormones. \nWhether these compounds are present in sufficient levels in our waterways to affect human health remains a topic of serious concern and ongoing research. \nSNAPSHOT: THE POTOMAC RIVER\nCascade into the Potomac River\nThe fish in the Potomac River may look normal at first glance\, but many of the Potomac’s male bass are producing eggs\, and similar “intersex” fish are being found in rivers across the country. \nWhile scientists have yet to pinpoint the cause of this mutation\, it’s thought that a group of compounds known as endocrine disruptors are responsible. \nThese chemicals affect key biological processes regulated by hormones\, such as growth\, development and reproduction\, and include common medications including birth control pills. \nWhatever the cause\, it’s unknown what effects these compounds are having on us when we drink or swim in the same waters. Like the canary in the coal mine\, the story of intersex fish may be an early warning of the effects that pharmaceuticals are having on the health of our waterways and on the people and organisms that depend on them. \nWHAT CAN WE DO?\nUse the following steps to reduce the risk of long-term human health effects of pharmaceuticals in your water supply: \nPROPER DRUG DISPOSAL\nThe cheapest and easiest way to limit pharmaceutical contamination is to keep drugs from entering our waterways in the first place. Drug take back programs\, public education on proper disposal\, and regulations to limit large-scale medicine flushing at hospitals and nursing facilities are important first steps that can greatly reduce the amount of contaminants entering our waterways. Some states and counties have begun to experiment with take-back programs. For example\, Washington State collected and disposed of over 15\,000 pounds of unwanted medications during a two year pilot program. \nRESEARCH\nAdditional research is needed to assess potential human health effects and identify the best methods for removing pharmaceutical compounds at treatment plants. If there is a significant long-term risk to public health\, more aggressive efforts to control the problem may be needed. \nLONG-TERM SOLUTIONS\nWhile proper disposal can limit pharmaceutical contamination\, more work on source control will ultimately be needed in addition to upgrading treatment infrastructure and reassessing our approach to use and dispose of pharmaceuticals and personal care products.

SUMMARY:Alligators Eat Fruit?
DESCRIPTION:Alligators are apex predators that also eat fruit. \nAlligators are carnivorous opportunists\, eating fish\, amphibians\, reptiles\, birds\, and mammals. What they eat is largely determined by their size. However\, they were recently reported to also eat fruit such as wild grapes\, elderberries\, and citrus fruits directly from trees. Alligators may help spread the seeds of these fruits throughout their habitats.

SUMMARY:Just Say No To Plastic Bags!
DESCRIPTION:JUST SAY NO TO PLASTIC BAGS\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlastic bags are from the same source as all plastic: crude oil. Like everything else manufactured from this non-renewable resource\, it has two major drawbacks: manufacturing it emits considerable amounts of pollution\, and the product is not biodegradable. In other words\, it is difficult to produce\, and nearly impossible to get rid of once produced. According to the Natural Environment website\, 60 to 100 million barrels of oil are required to manufacture a year’s worth of plastic bags worldwide\, and it takes approximately 400 years at least for a bag to biodegrade. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImpact\n\n\n\n\n\nThe impact of plastic bags on the environment is enormous. As of August 2010\, between 500 billion and 1 trillion plastic bags are being used each year worldwide. Approximately 100\,000 sea turtles and other marine animals die every year because they either mistake the bags for food or get strangled in them\, says Natural Environment. In Australia\, 50 million garbage bags end up as litter yearly\, and the “plastic soup” patch floating in the Pacific Ocean is twice the size of the continental United States. It is roughly 80 percent plastic\, according to The Independent\, a British newspaper. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEffects\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat exactly the impact of reusable bag usage in the U.S. is far from clear. Even though\, according to the website Earth 911\, reusing or recycling one ton of plastic means the equivalent of 11 barrels of oil are saved\, the argument sounds hollow when you consider once the bags exist\, they are here to stay. You can recycle them into anything you want\, but ultimately\, they will be discarded. Whether in the form of purses crocheted from Target plastic bags or as doggie-doo bags\, plastic always remains plastic. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlternatives\n\n\n\n\n\nEvery U.S. grocery chain carries cheap reusable grocery bags as of August 2010\, ranging from 99 cents to about $5. More upscale bags are available in practically all chain stores\, from bookstores like Borders to Whole Foods. In addition\, many people sew their own from leftover fabric\, or by converting old jeans or beach towels into personalized carry-on bags\, which is a fun and creative way to recycle. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPotential\n\n\n\n\n\nWhile some governments are taking steps to reign in plastic bags or ban them outright\, other countries are seriously lagging behind. In 2008\, China started to ban stores from offering free plastic bags; previously\, China had been using 3 billion plastic bags a day\, according to Treehugger. One of the most substantial efforts has taken place in Ireland\, where a tax has been issued on each plastic bag. Paying the equivalent of 20 cents tax per plastic bag used in a store has led to a 95 percent decrease in usage.

SUMMARY:We are proud to be LEED!
DESCRIPTION:Wekiva Island is proud to have a LEED Platinum Building. Our classroom building was the first LEED Platinum Building in Seminole County.\n\nTHIS is LEED\nBETTER BUILDINGS ARE OUR LEGACY. \nWHAT IS LEED?\nThe LEED plaque on a building is a mark of quality and achievement in green building.\nLeaders across the globe have made LEED the most widely used green building rating system in the world with 1.85 million square feet of construction space certifying every day. LEED certification provides independent verification of a building or neighborhood’s green features\, allowing for the design\, construction\, operations and maintenance of resource-efficient\, high-performing\, healthy\, cost-effective buildings. LEED is the triple bottom line in action\, benefiting people\, planet and profit. \n\n\n\nWHY LEED?\nLEED certification means healthier\, more productive places\, reduced stress on the environment by encouraging energy and resource-efficient buildings\, and savings from increased building value\, higher lease rates and decreased utility costs. LEED-certified buildings will directly contribute $29.8 billion to U.S. GDP by 2018. \n\n\n\nIn the U.S.\, buildings account for:\n\n\n\n38%\nOf all CO2 emissions \n  \n\n\n13.6%\nOf all potable water (15 trillion gal. / year) \n\n\n73%\nOf U.S. electricity consumption \n\n\n\nLEED projects are responsible for diverting over 80 million tons of waste from landfills. Compared to the average commercial building\, LEED Gold buildings in the General Services Administration’s portfolio consume a quarter less energy and generate 34% lower greenhouse gas emissions. \n\n\n\n\nLEED Buildings:\n\n\n\nPROVIDE A COMPETITIVE DIFFERENTIATOR\n61% of corporate leaders believe that sustainability leads to market differentiation and improved financial performance. \n\n\nMAKE FOR HAPPIER EMPLOYEES AND OCCUPANTS\nLEED-certified buildings are demonstrating increased recruitment and retention rates and increased productivity benefits for employers. 2.5 million employees are currently experiencing better indoor environmental quality in LEED buildings. \n\n\nATTRACT TENANTS\nToday’s tenants understand and are looking for the benefits that LEED-certified spaces have to offer. The new Class A office space is green; lease-up rates for green buildings typically range from average to 20% above average. \n\n\nSAVE ENERGY AND RESOURCES\, LOWER OPERATING COSTS\nFrom 2015-2018 LEED-certified buildings are estimated to generate as much as $1.2 billion in energy savings\, $149.5 million in water savings\, $715.3 million in maintenance savings\, and $54.2 million in waste savings. \n\n\nARE COST EFFECTIVE\nA study of 562 PNC bank branches showed that compared to non-LEED-certified facilities\, LEED-certified facilities annually opened up 458 more consumer deposit accounts and had $3\,032\,000 more in consumer deposit balance per facility per year and increased revenue. \n\n\nPROVIDE PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMUNITY BENEFITS\nAdobe Systems\, Inc.\, announced in 2006 that it had received three LEED Platinum awards for its headquarters towers; not only did it reap great publicity\, but the firm showed that it had garnered a net present value return of almost 20 to one on its initial investment. \n\n\nINCREASE RENTAL RATES\nA recent study of the San Diego market showed that the overall vacancy rate for green buildings was 4% lower than for non-green properties — 11.7%\, compared to 15.7% — and that LEED-certified buildings continued to command the highest rents. \n\n\nOPTIMIZE HEALTH\nBy bringing the good in — like clean air and access to daylight — and keeping the bad out—including harmful chemicals found in paints\, finishings and more — LEED creates healthy spaces. Buildings that optimize wellbeing are more important than ever. \n\n\n\nLEED Is Global:\nMore than 79\,000 projects are participating in LEED across 160 countries and territories\, comprising over 15 billion square feet. You’ve seen a LEED plaque before — USGBC estimates that nearly 5 million people experience a LEED building every day. Many of the world’s most well-known buildings have earned LEED certification. \nLEED works with top building professionals around the world to deliver a system that is applicable at the global\, regional and local levels. That means that LEED works no matter where you live — from Seattle\, Washington to Taipei\, Taiwan

SUMMARY:You Otter Know
DESCRIPTION:The river otter’s eyes and ears are located high on its head for surface swimming. A third eyelid\, or nictitating membrane\, protects the eye and allows the otter to see when swimming underwater. The otter’s ears and nostrils close underwater. \nRiver otters have long\, stiff and highly sensitive facial whiskers that aid in locating and capturing prey. The otters typically capture prey in their mouths but occasionally use their thumbs and forepaws to grasp and manipulate prey. Like other carnivores\, their teeth are well adapted for grinding and crushing.

SUMMARY:Happy Memorial Day
DESCRIPTION:Memorial Day Meaning – The History\nEach May\, the United States celebrates a day called Memorial Day. Does Memorial Day have meaning? What is the history of Memorial Day? \nMemorial Day was first widely observed in May 1868. The celebration commemorated the sacrifices of the Civil War and the proclamation was made by General John A Logan. Following the proclamation\, participants decorated graves of more than 20\,000 Union and Confederate soldiers. \nIn years since World War 1\, the day has become a celebration of honor for those who died in all America’s wars\, as well as those who are Veterans and current members of the US military. \nIn 1971\, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday. The United States celebrates this holiday the last Monday of May. \n  \nMemorial Day Meaning – Reagan’s Speech\nPresident Ronald Reagan is credited with reviving the practice of honoring Memorial Day and its meaning. One of his famous speeches was given at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day in 1986. \n“Today is the day we put aside to remember fallen heroes and to pray that no heroes will ever have to die for us again. It’s a day of thanks for the valor of others\, a day to remember the splendor of America and those of her children who rest in this cemetery and others. It’s a day to be with the family and remember. \n“I was thinking this morning that across the country children and their parents will be going to the town parade and the young ones will sit on the sidewalks and wave their flags as the band goes by. Later\, maybe\, they’ll have a cookout or a day at the beach. And that’s good\, because today is a day to be with the family and to remember. \n“Arlington\, this place of so many memories\, is a fitting place for some remembering. So many wonderful men and women rest here\, men and women who led colorful\, vivid\, and passionate lives. There are the greats of the military: Bull Halsey and the Admirals Leahy\, father and son; Black Jack Pershing; and the GI’s general\, Omar Bradley. Great men all\, military men. But there are others here known for other things. \n“Here in Arlington rests a sharecropper’s son who became a hero to a lonely people. Joe Louis came from nowhere\, but he knew how to fight. And he galvanized a nation in the days after Pearl Harbor when he put on the uniform of his country and said\, ‘I know we’ll win because we’re on God’s side.’ Audie Murphy is here\, Audie Murphy of the wild\, wild courage. For what else would you call it when a man bounds to the top of a disabled tank\, stops an enemy advance\, saves lives\, and rallies his men\, and all of it single-handedly. When he radioed for artillery support and was asked how close the enemy was to his position\, he said\, ‘Wait a minute and I’ll let you speak to them.’ [Laughter] \n“Michael Smith is here\, and Dick Scobee\, both of the space shuttle Challenger. Their courage wasn’t wild\, but thoughtful\, the mature and measured courage of career professionals who took prudent risks for great reward—in their case\, to advance the sum total of knowledge in the world. They’re only the latest to rest here; they join other great explorers with names like Grissom and Chaffee. \n“Oliver Wendell Holmes is here\, the great jurist and fighter for the right. A poet searching for an image of true majesty could not rest until he seized on ‘Holmes dissenting in a sordid age.’ Young Holmes served in the Civil War. He might have been thinking of the crosses and stars of Arlington when he wrote: ‘At the grave of a hero we end\, not with sorrow at the inevitable loss\, but with the contagion of his courage; and with a kind of desperate joy we go back to the fight.’ \n“All of these men were different\, but they shared this in common: They loved America very much. There was nothing they wouldn’t do for her. And they loved with the sureness of the young. It’s hard not to think of the young in a place like this\, for it’s the young who do the fighting and dying when a peace fails and a war begins. Not far from here is the statue of the three servicemen—the three fighting boys of Vietnam. It\, too\, has majesty and more. Perhaps you’ve seen it—three rough boys walking together\, looking ahead with a steady gaze. There’s something wounded about them\, a kind of resigned toughness. But there’s an unexpected tenderness\, too. At first you don’t really notice\, but then you see it. The three are touching each other\, as if they’re supporting each other\, helping each other on. \n“I know that many veterans of Vietnam will gather today\, some of them perhaps by the wall. And they’re still helping each other on. They were quite a group\, the boys of Vietnam—boys who fought a terrible and vicious war without enough support from home\, boys who were dodging bullets while we debated the efficacy of the battle. It was often our poor who fought in that war; it was the unpampered boys of the working class who picked up the rifles and went on the march. They learned not to rely on us; they learned to rely on each other. And they were special in another way: They chose to be faithful. They chose to reject the fashionable skepticism of their time. They chose to believe and answer the call of duty. They had the wild\, wild courage of youth. They seized certainty from the heart of an ambivalent age; they stood for something. \n“And we owe them something\, those boys. We owe them first a promise: That just as they did not forget their missing comrades\, neither\, ever\, will we. And there are other promises. We must always remember that peace is a fragile thing that needs constant vigilance. We owe them a promise to look at the world with a steady gaze and\, perhaps\, a resigned toughness\, knowing that we have adversaries in the world and challenges and the only way to meet them and maintain the peace is by staying strong. \n“That\, of course\, is the lesson of this century\, a lesson learned in the Sudetenland\, in Poland\, in Hungary\, in Czechoslovakia\, in Cambodia. If we really care about peace\, we must stay strong. If we really care about peace\, we must\, through our strength\, demonstrate our unwillingness to accept an ending of the peace. We must be strong enough to create peace where it does not exist and strong enough to protect it where it does. That’s the lesson of this century and\, I think\, of this day. And that’s all I wanted to say. The rest of my contribution is to leave this great place to its peace\, a peace it has earned. \n“Thank all of you\, and God bless you\, and have a day full of memories.”
