SUMMARY:What is an invasive species?
DESCRIPTION:What is an invasive species?\n\nAn invasive species is a non-native species (including seeds\, eggs\, spores\, or other propagules) whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic harm\, environmental harm\, or harm to human health. \nThe term “invasive” is used for the most aggressive species. These species grow and reproduce rapidly\, causing major disturbance to the areas in which they are present.\n\n  \nThings to know about invasive species:\n\nInvasive species\, if left uncontrolled\, can and will limit land use now and into the future.\nThe longer we ignore the problem the harder and more expensive the battle for control will become.\nInvasive species can decrease your ability to enjoy hunting\, fishing\, camping\, hiking\, boating and other outdoor recreational activities.\nThe United States suffers from $1.1-120 billion per year in economic losses due to exotic\, invasive species.\nApproximately 42% of Threatened or Endangered species are at risk due to non-native\, invasive species.

SUMMARY:Wekiwa Springs History
DESCRIPTION:Wekiwa Springs State Park\n\n\n\nClay Springs Boathouse\, Circa 1880\nThis area was known as Clay Springs until 1906\, when the name was changed to Wekiwa Springs. Forty-two million gallons of crystal clear water flow each day from Wekiwa Springs into Wekiwa Springs Run. The run joins with Rock Springs Run to form the beautiful upper Wekiva River. Creeks\, later called Seminoles\, are the most recent Native Americans to have lived here. Wekiwa means ‘spring of water’ and Wekiva means ‘flowing water’ in the Creek language.  Recreational activities have always been a part of the area which had several structures near the Spring. The largest and most prominent structure was the bathhouse\, where swimmers would change into their swimsuits. In an attempt to draw northerners to the area and promote tourism\, the springs were touted as medicinal waters that would cure an assortment of ailments. \nThe Apopka Sportsman Club bought the land that is presently Wekiwa Springs State Park in 1941 from the Wilson Cypress Company\, which logged the land for hardwoods\, in addition to cypress and pine. The Apopka Sportsman Club used the land for hunting and fishing until 1969 when they sold it to the state of Florida to become Wekiwa Springs State Park. The club built several hunting cabins on the property\, most of which are no longer in existence\, but have been turned into primitive camping sites. One cabin remains and currently serves as a ranger residence. \nThe Florida Park Service Ranger Academy is a bi-annual training that is aimed at teaching all new park rangers about the mission of the Florida Park Service. The first Ranger Academy was held at O’Leno State Park in 1972. In 1977\, Ranger Academy was moved to Wekiwa Springs State Park\, where it has been held ever since. \n\nGraduates of the first Florida Park Service Ranger Academy\, circa 1972\nThe National Wild and Scenic Rivers System was created by Congress in 1968 and signed into law by Lyndon Johnson on the 2nd of October to preserve certain rivers with outstanding natural\, cultural\, and recreational values in a free-flowing condition for the enjoyment of present and future generations. The Act is notable for safeguarding the special character of these rivers\, while also recognizing the potential for their appropriate use and development. It encourages river management that crosses political boundaries and promotes public participation in developing goals for river protection. \nThe Wekiva River from its confluence with the St. Johns River to Wekiwa Springs\, Rock Springs Run from its headwaters at Rock Springs to the confluence with the Wekiwa Springs Run and the Blackwater Creek from the outflow of Lake Norris to the confluence with the Wekiva River were protected under the Act.

SUMMARY:How Sewage Pollution Ends Up In Rivers
DESCRIPTION:3.5 MILLION AMERICANS GET SICK EACH YEAR AFTER SWIMMING\, BOATING\, FISHING\, OR OTHERWISE TOUCHING WATER THEY THOUGHT WAS SAFE.\nWhere does human waste mingle with household chemicals\, personal hygiene products\, pharmaceuticals\, and everything else that goes down the drains in American homes and businesses? \nIn sewers. \nAnd what can you get when rain\, pesticides\, fertilizers\, automotive chemicals\, and trash run off the streets and down the gutters into those very same sewers? Sewage backing up into people’s basements. Sewage spilling onto streets and parks. Sewage pouring into rivers and streams. \nEach year\, more than 860 billion gallons of this vile brew escapes sewer systems across the country. That’s enough to flood all of Pennsylvania ankle-deep. It’s enough for every American to take one bath each week for an entire year. \nAfter bursting out of a pipe or manhole cover\, this foul slurry pollutes the nearest body of water. Downstream\, some of it may be pumped out\, treated\, and piped into more homes and businesses. From there\, it goes back into a sewer system\, and the cycle resumes. \nA THREAT TO HUMAN HEALTH\nUntreated human sewage teems with salmonella\, hepatitis\, dysentery\, cryptosporidium\, and many other infectious diseases. \nCanal polluted by raw sewage\nOne hundred years ago\, epidemics of these diseases helped limit the life expectancy of a U.S. citizen to about 50 years. Estimates vary for how many people sewage still sickens or kills each year\, but they are all large. \nGerms linger even after the stench of sewage has dispersed. Healthy adults may never realize that yesterday’s swim caused today’s cough\, diarrhea\, or ear infection. Young children\, their grandparents\, and people already weakened by illness are more likely to become seriously ill or die. Scientists believe as many as 3.5 million Americans get sick each year after swimming\, boating\, fishing\, or otherwise touching water they thought was safe. \nA 1998 study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology blamed water pollution for one-third of all reported gastroenteritis cases and two-thirds of all ear infections. It’s not just the people who play in and around the water who are at risk. Between 1985 and 2000\, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) documented 251 separate disease outbreaks and nearly half a million cases of waterborne illness from polluted drinking water in the United States. Another study by the CDC and the National Academy of Sciences concluded that most illnesses caused by eating tainted seafood have human sewage as the root cause. \nOUTDATED TREATMENT PLANTS\nTo understand why this is happening\, it’s helpful to know some history. For centuries most American sewage poured into the nearest river or creek with little or no treatment\, and few people gave it a second thought. \nOld wastewater treatment plant\nThat changed when Congress passed the Clean Water Act in 1972 and the federal government began making significant investments to modernize sewage treatment infrastructure serving communities across the country. \nToday\, many of the plants built with that initial investment are undersized or are near the end of their effective lives. \nThere are 600\,000 miles of sewer pipes across the country and the average age is 33 years. Some pipes in cities along the eastern seaboard are nearly 200 years old. Some are even made of wood. The American Society of Civil Engineers has given America’s wastewater infrastructure a “D” grade overall. \nRUNAWAY DEVELOPMENT\nToday\, poorly planned development compounds the problem of aging infrastructure. As urban areas sprawl into the countryside\, new expanses of concrete and asphalt increase the amount of stormwater surging into sewers — and the amount of pollution spewing out. \nA single acre of wetlands can hold up to 1.5 million gallons of rain or melting snow. Otherwise it winds up in the sewer system.\nTrees help keep water out of sewer systems\, too. In fact\, the group American Forests estimates that as Washington\, D.C.’s tree canopy thinned by 43 percent between 1973 and 1997\, the amount of stormwater running into the city’s aging sewer system increased by 34 percent. \nOlder sewage systems combine stormwater with household sewage\, but even in systems where they are separated some stormwater ends up in the sewer\, where it contributes to raw sewage overflows. \nSOLUTIONS\nAll people deserve clean water free of the many dangerous pollutants found in sewage. The only way to ensure this is to stop sewage overflows and leaks and ensure that no sewage is released into our streams\, rivers\, and lakes untreated. It will cost hundreds of billions of dollars and take decades to update the nation’s wastewater infrastructure to this level. \nStreet-side swale and adjacent pervious concrete sidewalk in Seattle\, US. Stormwater is filtered through these features into soil\, reducing the runoff into city sewers.\nBut it isn’t enough to simply invest more. Protecting and expanding natural areas helps prevent stormwater from rushing into the sewer in the first place — stopping sewer overflows before they start. \nThat’s investing smarter. \nIn fact\, planting trees\, restoring wetlands\, and creating green roofs are often the most cost-effective ways to expand the capacity of sewer systems. \nA single mature tree with a thirty-foot crown can keep 4\,600 gallons of water out of the sewer each year. For less than $300\,000\, it’s possible to construct an artificial wetland that can intercept 3.25 million gallons of stormwater otherwise destined for the sewer. \nIn June 2003\, Ford Motor Company planted ten acres of vegetation on the roof of its Dearborn\, MI truck factory\, keeping as many as four million gallons of rain out of the sewer system each year. Projects like these prevent sewage overflows as surely as bigger pipes — and cost less. \nUntil we make significant progress towards reducing sewage in our water\, there must be strong notification programs that will alert people when there is a danger of contacting raw sewage. Wastewater facilities should be required to notify the media\, citizens\, and environmental agencies when they release untreated sewage into the environment. American Rivers works for federal and state right-to-know policies that require citizens to be informed of sewage contamination in their waterways. Not only will such programs keep people healthy by avoiding raw sewage\, but it will also galvanize further support for solutions to reduce sewage pollution. \nClean water. It’s essential. It’s irreplaceable. If Americans today want our children and grandchildren to splash along the shore at sunset or drink from the faucet without worry\, then it’s time for us to act. It’s time to make the commitment to keep raw sewage out of our wate

SUMMARY:Rent our Audubon Cabana and support The Audubon Center For Birds Of Prey
DESCRIPTION:Each time our Audubon Cabana is rented\, we donate the proceeds to The Audubon Center For Birds Of Prey. \nThe Birds Of Prey Center is located in Maitland\, FL. \n\n\nAudubon House and Center History\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Audubon House \n\nAudubon House\n\nThis house represents a typical veranda bungalow built in the 1920s by a builder named Patterson.  Most houses of this type have now been demolished or intensively renovated\, and few examples of this style of architecture remain. Located on the southeast shore of Lake Sybelia\, this two story wood frame house sits on 3 acres in Maitland\, Florida. \nMaitland is the historic home of Audubon in Florida; the first meeting was held March 2\, 1900 in a Dommerich neighborhood home less than two miles away. This first group of Audubon leaders included N.Y. Governor and later U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt\, Florida’s Governor\, Rollins College’s President\, Stetson University’s President\, and the editors of the state’s largest newspapers. \nThe Florida Audubon Society did not have a permanent home until long-time supporter and Florida Audubon board member\, Lisa von Borowsky\, purchased this Maitland property in 1959.  The property was one of the last remaining grove homes along the shores of Lake Sybelia.  Once under Audubon ownership\, the house served as a meeting place\, offices and gift shop. In the 1970s Doris Mager\, the gift shop manager\, began to care for the sick and injured birds of prey that were brought here by caring members of the community.  After receiving memorial funds from Madelyn Baldwin along with other donations\, the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey was opened on October 19\, 1979.  Today\, this property is the main site for Audubon education programs and offices.

SUMMARY:Why Do We Need Wild Rivers?
DESCRIPTION:Sockeye Spawners\nA river isn’t only important to the animals who live in it\, or the people who boat on it. Its value reaches to everyone. \nEven if you’ve never felt the charge of a rapid\, or a nimble trout as it slides through your fingers\, you’re still connected to the rivers and streams that flow nearby—we all are. \nRivers are our main source of clean drinking water\, and their economic value\, environmental value\, and even aesthetic or spiritual values touch each and every American. \nOnly a fraction of one percent of America’s rivers flow freely. And it’s no surprise that those are the ones people flock to for river recreation\, and that are home to the most vibrant wildlife populations. Special protection\, such as a Wild and Scenic designation\, helps make sure rivers and their ecosystems remain free and healthy for all of us. \nHere’s why that’s important. \nA HEALTHY\, WILD RIVER MAKES FOR A CLEAN WATER SUPPLY\nWe all drink water\, and the majority of our supply comes from rivers and streams. In fact\, if all the world’s water were to fit in a gallon jug\, only a tablespoon of it would be the equivalent of the fresh water available to us to drink. \nThe health of river ecosystems directly affects the quality of the water we drink. The forest and river act as filters\, constantly purifying the water so it requires less chemical treatment and expensive filtration to be clean enough to drink. \nWILD RIVERS CAN PROVIDE FLOOD PROTECTION\nA wild river that occasionally floods its banks nourishes floodplain habitat\, important for fish and wildlife. Natural floods can also keep invasive species in check and give important cues to fish that swim upstream to spawn. \nA wild river’s connected floodplains and wetlands mitigate a flood’s damage\, providing a “relief valve” for floodwaters\, protecting downstream communities. When we protect a wild river we give it room to move\, and room to accommodate floodwaters safely. \nRIVERS SUPPORT RECREATION AND TOURISM\nWhitewater rafting in Oregon\nWild rivers are fun—and fun can be lucrative. Rafting\, fishing\, swimming\, hiking and wildlife watching all draw people—and therefore money—to areas with healthy rivers. \nSometimes those are rural areas with little else to rely on for economic development. River recreation brings jobs into areas that might otherwise turn to less sustainable industries to support their economies. \nVisitors rent kayaks\, buy gas\, eat in restaurants and stay in hotels\, which all adds up to cash flowing into the community. According to a report by the Outdoor Industry Association\, outdoor recreation participants spend $86 billion annually on watersports (kayaking\, stand-up paddling\, rafting\, canoeing\, and motorized boating)\, the second highest revenue stream\, with camping in the lead at $142 billion. Watersports directly support more than 800\,000 jobs annually. \nWILD RIVERS SUPPORT THE ENTIRE WEB OF LIFE\nCountless species of fish\, birds and other animals live in and along rivers and depend on them for their food. Riverside areas in the West provide habitat for more species of birds than all other western vegetation combined. \nEighty percent of neotropical migrant species (mostly songbirds) depend on riparian areas for nesting or migration. And\, eighty percent of all vertebrate wildlife in the Southwest depend on riverside areas for at least half of their life. Rivers also connect ecosystems to one other and affect landscapes far beyond the apparent surface of the water. For example\, wetlands provide breeding areas for many migratory birds\, and rivers provide corridors for wildlife to move within and migrate as American landscapes become increasingly fenced off and fragmented. \nWithout the last remaining wild areas that rivers provide—while all around land is being developed or fenced off—species as small as crabs and as large as moose lose their ability to find food and reproduce. \nWILD RIVERS HOLD IMMEASURABLE SPIRITUAL AND AESTHETIC VALUE\nIf literature is any indication\, wild and free rivers are a key metaphor for the human experience. \nBooks have been written in honor of them. Poets use them as similes. Many religions have long held water as a part of their spiritual values. If there had been no wild and free Mississippi\, there would be no Huck Finn. The river was a symbol of freedom and opportunity. \nEven today\, whether it’s sitting by a tiny trickling alpine stream or rafting the mighty Colorado River through the Grand Canyon\, people from all walks of life find inspiration and a sense of smallness and peace with nature alongside wild rivers. \nEconomic values aside\, we are all psychologically\, spiritually connected to clean\, flowing rivers

SUMMARY:Live Music By Jeff Howell
DESCRIPTION:Wekiva Island is excited to have Jeff Howell play in The Tooting Otter! \n  \n“Jeff Howell is a ‘porch-pickin’ fool!!!  says JAM magazine 893. The singer-songwriter\, guitarist has toured extensively throughout the States\, Canada and overseas playing his unique brand of Louisiana acoustic blues and rock and roll. The original styling of his songwriting extends from fat five-piece horns and New Orleans funk on his debut album\, “Gimme’ A Dollar” (released in 1989) through the imaginative soul of “Blues Junk” (released in 1993) to the down home acoustic finger-picking of his just released third album “The Tree”. This latest effort brings Howell back to the provenance of his musical influences. He explains “All of my early musical deities were acoustic. While all of my friends were into ‘The Stones’ or ‘Black Sabbath’ or ‘Zeppelin\,’ I was into Doc Watson\, Hank Williams (Sr.) and Jim Croce! I’ve always loved the ring of acoustic guitars!” \nAfter graduating high school\, Howell began honing his performance skills in small (really small!!!) redneck bars around his hometown of Baton Rouge\, La. “My first gig ever was for free but\, at the end of the night\, they didn’t have a hat so they passed around a spittoon and I ended up making $8.25 in soggy change.”Several months later\, he was asked to join “Clutch\,” a 50’s style rock and roll band that traveled some around the states but mostly covered the “Crawfish Circuit” throughout the state of Louisiana. The guys in “Clutch” taught Howell to sing harmony and encouraged him to experiment with other instruments\, allowing members to trade off at any time during the show. As “Clutch” began to broaden their horizons\, they found a welcome refuge in Orlando\, Florida at the nefarious “Inferno” nightclub (half 50’s club\, half topless bar.) Howell decided that he had found a home. \nAfter five years of “sha-na-nas” and “dip-dip-dips” and “sha-boom sha-booms\,” he had had enough! He quit the 50’s and landed a job in a studio in Orlando and started writing seriously. The years of playing “oldies” and studio experimentation laid an unusual foundation for musical expression. Howell mines the depths of the music to produce his own eclectic mix.” says Mick Rainsford of Blueprint Magazine (UK) 5/96. “His rich and powerful voice being as ideally suited to the blues as it would in a rock orientated setting.” Dennis Walkling touts that “Howell is adept at many moods.” (Jam Magazine 5/95)Later\, Howell took his guitar and original songs to Boston and then Los Angeles for periods of six months and a year respectively. Then he moved back to Orlando and\, just for convenience’s sake\, started playing solo in clubs around town. There\, he has built a strong and loyal following and is never at a loss for work.

SUMMARY:Explore the Real Florida
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to come observe and enjoy the unique ecosystem of this spring-fed river. Springs\, and their corresponding rivers\, have been widely used as important recreational and educational locations throughout Florida history. The spring leads to the underground waterways\, flowing through limestone caverns below the surface. The clear water flows directly from the Florida aquifer and the surrounding wetlands and uplands have adapted to host a diverse variety of plants and animals\, including many protected species.
