SUMMARY:Live Music by Cat Ridgeway
DESCRIPTION:Hailing from Orlando\, Florida\, Cat Ridgeway is a skilled songwriter who can write in any genre. Cat’s eclectic\, soulful style shines through her ability to play guitar and harmonica\, trumpet\, trombone\, drums\, piano\, and bass. \nIn the last year alone\, Cat has established herself as a true up-and-comer. She and her band opened the main stage at Okeechobee Music and Arts Festival for Trombone Shorty\, Arcade Fire\, Leon Bridges\, Local Natives\, and Lil Dicky\, and just months later went on to their debut performance at the House of Blues Orlando to an extremely responsive crowd. As a solo act\, Cat also played the Wire and Wood Alpharetta Songwriters Festival with the likes of Robert Randolph and the Family Band\, Justin Townes Earle\, Dan Wilson (of Semisonic)\, and Glenn Phillips (of Toad the Wet Sprocket) where she quickly became a crowd favorite. A foreshadow to this year’s success\, Cat won indie rock duo Tegan and Sara’s world wide cover contest in 2016. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCat’s project “Passenger Seat” was the direct result of her overfunded Kickstarter campaign “Cat Goes to Nashville”. She had the privilege of working with the likes of Gordon Kennedy (co-writer of “Change the World” recorded by Eric Clapton) and many other seasoned Nashville players on the EP. Cat’s most recent single “Whiskey Lullabies” was recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis\, TN and features Gregg Allman’s horn section. \nAlthough it ultimately didn’t make the final cut\, Cat’s debut album “On a Windy Day” features the title track originally written for the major motion picture\, “Bernie” starring Jack Black\, Shirley MacLaine and Matthew McConaughey. Cat has lent her voice to many notable causes including Tunes for Tots\, Make A Wish Foundation\, and Hospice of the Comforter. She is also highly sought after by advertising agencies to sing radio jingles and commercials.

SUMMARY:Live Music By Matt Burke
DESCRIPTION:Matt Burke is a central-Florida based singer/songwriter whose soulful mix of rock\, folk\, Americana\, and funk has drawn comparisons to Jim Croce\, Tom Petty\, and Ryan Adams. SUMMARY:Shell Island History
DESCRIPTION:Rollins College has owned Shell Island for 65 years and made an extended campus of it for almost most of its history since 1885. In the late 1920’s and ‘30’s\, it was a regular practice for a group of eight Rollins students and their chaperones to spend a weekend on the river\, men one week and women the next\, sleeping in a large log-cabin with a dirt floor. During this decade\, by an agreement with the owners of the island\, the Wilson Cypress Company\, as many as thirteen hundred students got a sense of the river community as a part of their own Florida education. \nBecause the college was having trouble keeping the cabin and island clean between weekend visits\, in 1938 they arranged to buy the island for $10 and other considerations through Wilson’s President\, Russ McPherson\, who had two daughters pursuing degrees at the college. \nCourtesy of Rollins College Archives \nAt present the island is an inholding of the Wekiwa Springs State Park and still belongs to Rollins. The Trustees of the College do not wish to give up the property because the island is connected to its historical character as a frontier and pragmatic liberal arts college. Officials of the college\, however\, have entered into an informal agreement whereby the park governs and polices the island while providing access to Rollins upon notification. The reason for such an agreement is quite practical: the island has a long history of attracting squatters who usually leave more than footprints. The question of how best to preserve the site is left unresolved\, but as the following story reveals\, the place has considerable educational value.

SUMMARY:The Story Of The Stove
DESCRIPTION:Have you seen the stove in the corner of The Tooting Otter? \n\nIn the 1940’s\, one of the original owners of the Wekiwa Marina\, Cliff Freeman\, built a stilted cabin on one of the many islands down the Wekiva River. This cabin was one of dozens built over the next 30 years In 1975\, a State Of Florida Circuit Court Judge ruled that the land these cabins were built on was in fact owned by the state. The “squatters”\, as they were come to be known spent most of the 1970’s fighting the states ruling. In the mid 1980s\, the state won the court fight and evicted the “squatters”. The State Of Florida and volunteers tore down the cabins and hauled away more than 100 tons of trash. This Magic Chef stove was in the cabin of Barbara Stanley\, Barbara\, known as Momma Bear to the locals\, was the manager of the Wekiwa Marina. Legend has it that the locals could hear her biscuits rising in this stove and always showed up at her cabin just as she was pulling them from this oven. Barbara refused to allow the state to tear her cabin down and like many others she decided to burn her cabin down herself. Gary Mulini\, former employee of the Wekiwa Marina and the current owner of Without A Paddle Cafe was given this stove by Momma Bear. He decided that there is no better place for this piece of Wekiva River history than right here.

SUMMARY:Wekiva Island is a proud member of American Rivers
DESCRIPTION:OUR WORK\nWe combine national advocacy with field work in key river basins to deliver the greatest impact. We are practical problem-solvers with positions informed by science. We build partnerships and work closely with local river advocates\, business and agriculture interests\, recreation groups and others to forge win-win solutions. And with our expertise\, outreach\, and additional grants\, we deliver the highest return on investment. \nDRIVEN BY SUCCESS\nOur generous supporters make the protection and restoration of the nation’s rivers possible. See the graphic to the right for a snapshot of recent successes. \n \nTogether\, we will achieve the following goals: \n\nProtect wild rivers to safeguard our natural heritage\nGoal: Protect 5\,000 new miles of Wild and Scenic Rivers and one million acres of riverside lands.\nRestore damaged rivers to improve flows\, reconnect fish and wildlife habitat and improve public safety\nGoal: Remove 400 hazardous and outdated dams\, restore 10\,000 miles of rivers and 1\,000 acres of floodplains.\nConserve clean water to ensure ample supplies for fish\, wildlife\, agriculture and communities\nGoal: Reduce pollution in 100\,000 miles of rivers and improve clean water for one-third of all Americans.\n\nWHY NOW?\nWater is life. Yet rivers and freshwater ecosystems are among the most imperiled on earth. \nDid you know… \n\nForty-four percent of assessed waterways in the U.S. are too polluted for fishing and swimming.\nForty percent of North America’s freshwater species are at risk of extinction.\nClimate change is bringing more severe droughts and floods\, putting increasing pressure on water resources across the country. More than one-third of all counties in the lower 48 states will face higher risks of water shortages by mid-century as a result of climate change.\nPollution and habitat destruction threaten fish and wildlife and our own health and well-being.\n\nOUR STORY\nIn 1973\, the United States was losing its best rivers at an alarming rate. A group of river runners and conservationists met in Denver\, Colorado to confront the fact that unnecessary dams were destroying many of the nation’s last wild\, free-flowing rivers. These river advocates also were concerned that Congress had failed to grant federal protection to any rivers since the original Wild and Scenic Rivers Act passed in 1968. \nThey decided to form a national river conservation organization\, the American Rivers Conservation Council\, which became American Rivers. \n\nWe had to move fast or we would lose our best rivers. [The early 70’s] was the golden age of dam building and we needed to fight back.Brent Blackwelder\, co-founder of American Rivers\n\nToday\, we are the nation’s voice for rivers. True to our roots\, we continue to stand up for wild rivers. But that’s not all – over the years\, we have built deep expertise and success on a wide range of issues from clean drinking water to dam removal to flood protection\, and many more. \nWith more than 275\,000 supporters\, we make a difference every day for clean water\, rivers and communities nationwide. \nRivers connect us – to our past\, to our future\, and each other. Thank you for helping us build a future of healthy rivers. \n

SUMMARY:Live Music with Thomas Wynn & Hanna Harber
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy live music in The Totting Otter General Store! \n  \nFlorida favorites Thomas Wynn and Hanna Harber are back with their amazing sounds! \n  \nAs a young musician\, Harber emulated the vocals of established singers like Patty Griffin\, but she has learned to use her natural singing abilities to convey messages through song. Seeing bands like The Avett Brothers and The Ducks with her parents while growing up helped to show her that musicians with all types of vocal range can be successful\, she said. \n“I just really latched onto this idea that you can sound however you want to sound and chase the muse however you like to\, but as long as it feels honest to you\,” Harber said.
