SUMMARY:Alligator Snapping Turtles
DESCRIPTION:Alligator snapping turtles are sometimes described as dinosaur-like because of their spiky shells and primitive-looking faces. They have three pointed ridges along their shells that run from head to tail. Unlike all other species of snapping turtle\, this one has eyes on the sides of its head. \nThe alligator snapping turtle is the largest species of freshwater turtle. Males typically weigh between 155 and 175 pounds (70 and 80 kilograms). It is said that a 400-pound (180-kilogram) alligator snapping turtle was caught in Kansas in 1937\, but there isn’t sufficient evidence to confirm the claim. \n\n\nRANGE \nAlligator snapping turtles are found exclusively in the United States\, from northern Florida to eastern Texas and as far north as Iowa. They are almost exclusively aquatic\, and tend to stay submerged and motionless for so long that algae begins to grow on their shells. They can go 50 minutes before needing to surface for a gulp of air. Except for egg-laying females\, these turtles almost never come on land. River systems\, lakes\, and wetland comprise their preferred habitats. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDIET \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTheir specially adapted tongue allows them to catch prey with little work—a lure-like projection of the tongue attracts curious fish that swim right into the turtle’s mouth. To attract an unsuspecting victim\, this turtle will lay on the bottom of the riverbed and open his jaws to reveal what looks like a delicious bright red wriggling worm\, luring prey by fiendishly twitching this appendage back and forth. A fish that gets duped by the turtle’s tongue will swim right into the range of the hungry predator’s jaws. \nThey can also actively search for prey by tasting chemicals in the water that are indicative of a particular species. This way\, even when their prey is hiding in the sediment\, they can still sense them. \n\n\nBEHAVIOR \nThese solitary reptiles spend much of their time in the water—even capable of holding their breath for 40 to 50 minutes. They venture onto land to nest with females. Correlated with a solitary lifestyle\, there is little structure and no parental care to their young. \n\n\nLIFE HISTORY \nAdults mate in the spring and females lay eggs two months later. The eggs hatch after 100 to 140 days. The incubation temperature of the nest determines the gender of the offspring—females develop in warmer temperatures and males develop in cooler temperatures. The newly hatched turtles are similar to the adults in appearance. Eggs and juveniles are consumed by fish\, raccoons\, and birds\, but the only predator of fully grown adults is humans. Reproductive maturity is reached at 11 to 13 years. The turtle’s typical lifespan in the wild is between 11 and 45 years\, but captive alligator snapping turtles have lived to 70 years of age. \n\n\nCONSERVATION \nAlligator snapping turtles are declining due to habitat degradation and overharvesting for their meat. They are not an endangered species\, but some states have imposed bans on collecting them from the wild. \n\n\nFUN FACT \nSome myths claim that alligator snapping turtles are known to attack people\, but this isn’t the case. But with a bite force of 1\,000 pounds\, their powerful jaws can snap through bone—so they should never be handled in the wild.

SUMMARY:The Great Egret
DESCRIPTION:We have a favorite Great Egret we like to call “George”. You can often find “George” checking the bushes for a snack. \nDid you know that the Great Egret was nearly wiped out in the United States in the late 1800s\, when its plumes were sought for use in fashion\, the Great Egret made a comeback after early conservationists put a stop to the slaughter and protected its colonies; as a result\, this bird became the symbol of the National Audubon Society.

SUMMARY:Florida Friendly Landscaping
DESCRIPTION:We only plant Native Florida plants here on The Island including\, Tick Seed\, Fire Brush\, Cypress Trees\, Florida Anise\, Lantana\, Sea Grapes\, Saw Palmetto\, Milk Weed\, Fakahatchee Grass and Black Eyed Susans. \nWhy is Native Planting so important? \nNative plants work for you\n  \n\nPest reduction. Professional native landscaping helps reduce pests naturally by attracting the right bugs and wildlife. Birds\, butterflies\, and bats eat pests and help your landscaping thrive. Florida’s bug-friendly climate makes natural insect control especially appealing.\nWater conservation. Native Florida plants require less irrigation and help keep stormwater runoff from damaging our ecosystem. When your native landscaping requires less water\, you save money while knowing that you’re making a positive impact on the local environment.\nPollution reduction. With the right Florida-friendly landscaping\, the need for fertilizer and pesticides is greatly reduced. Because native plants thrive naturally\, they require fewer chemicals that can damage the environment.\n\nNative plants keep our bodies of water healthier\nIn Florida\, every body of water is important. From beautiful beaches to underground springs\, water systems are crucial to Florida’s industry and image. At Pridgen\, we strive for native Florida landscaping that complements local bodies of water. Even small lakes and watersheds are served best by native plant life\, both in and around the water. Native Florida plants benefit bodies of water by fostering wildlife\, reducing water pollution and encouraging proper drainage. \n

SUMMARY:Lotus & Luna
DESCRIPTION:We proudly sell Lotus & Luna in The Tooting Otter! \n  \nEach Lotus and Luna accessory is handcrafted by female artisans living in various small villages in Northern Thailand\, providing them and their neighbors with consistent\, fair employment. The Lotus and Luna design team collaborates directly with a lead artisan in each village to carefully create designs from high quality\, locally sourced materials. The lead artisan then trains a larger group of women in her village how to create the designated product. These artisans range from all ages\, backgrounds\, and physical abilities\, and are tasked based on their individual skills and interests. As each woman learns to make our products\, she learns a new skill\, and as the collections evolve through the seasons her skill set grows. This empowers our artisans individually while allowing their village economy to not only sustain\, but grow. We are committed to providing our artisans with ethical work standards by paying them with fair wages\, paid vacation time and sick leave. They are encouraged to work as often or as little as they choose\, on site or from the comfort of their homes.

SUMMARY:Straws Suck
DESCRIPTION:Why are straws so damaging to the marine environment?\nDisposable straws are usually made from plastic and plastic never breaks down. As time goes by plastic will separate into smaller and smaller pieces\, but never completely biodegrades. \nIn USA alone\, 500 million straws are used every single day. We use straws for around twenty minutes before we toss them away\, which is an astonishingly quick lifespan for an item that will be on the planet forever. Straws also contain BPA\, and can’t be recycled. \nIt can be hard to see how using one measly plastic straw is going to cause huge amounts of damage to the environment\, but let me put in to context for you. Recently a team of scientists in Costa Rica came across an endangered species of sea turtle with what they thought was a parasitic worm blocking its airway. They realised it was actually a plastic straw. Hours from veterinary help\, the scientists successfully dislodged the straw themselves and released the turtle back into the ocean.

SUMMARY:Pharmaceuticals in rivers?
DESCRIPTION:In recent years there has been mounting concern about the presence of chemicals from pharmaceuticals and personal care products\, such as cosmetics\, in the nation’s streams and rivers. \nThere is no question that these chemicals are present in the nation’s waterways. The USGS conducted the first major investigation in 2002 and found\, on average\, seven chemical compounds in the streams they surveyed. \nPharmaceuticals in our water supply. Our bodies release them when we urinate or flush old drugs down the toilet.\nIn 2008\, the Associated Press found an array of pharmaceuticals\, from pain killers to antibiotics to mood stabilizers\, in the drinking water of 24 major metropolitan water suppliers. Further\, 34 of the 62 water suppliers contacted by the AP couldn’t provide results as they had never tested for pharmaceutical compounds. \nThis problem won’t go away anytime soon. \nAmerican drug consumption has increased rapidly in recent years\, and Americans fill 3.7 billion prescriptions every year. The chemicals in these drugs end up in waterways after being excreted from the body or when unused medication is flushed down the toilet. \nMost municipal sewage treatment facilities do not remove the pharmaceutical compounds from your water\, and major upgrades would be required to do so. The federal government hasn’t stepped in to require testing or set safety limits\, leaving many questions unanswered. \nHOW DOES THIS IMPACT MY HEALTH?\nPharmaceutical compounds are found at much lower concentrations in rivers and streams than the normally prescribed doses\, but there is concern that chronic exposure to numerous compounds could cause serious health problems and that compounds can act synergistically to cause adverse health effects. \nOf particular concern is the presence of endocrine disruptors\, which come from a variety of agricultural\, industrial\, and domestic sources\, including pharmaceuticals. \nThese compounds disrupt internal biological processes such as development\, growth\, and reproduction that are regulated by hormones. \nWhether these compounds are present in sufficient levels in our waterways to affect human health remains a topic of serious concern and ongoing research. \nSNAPSHOT: THE POTOMAC RIVER\nCascade into the Potomac River\nThe fish in the Potomac River may look normal at first glance\, but many of the Potomac’s male bass are producing eggs\, and similar “intersex” fish are being found in rivers across the country. \nWhile scientists have yet to pinpoint the cause of this mutation\, it’s thought that a group of compounds known as endocrine disruptors are responsible. \nThese chemicals affect key biological processes regulated by hormones\, such as growth\, development and reproduction\, and include common medications including birth control pills. \nWhatever the cause\, it’s unknown what effects these compounds are having on us when we drink or swim in the same waters. Like the canary in the coal mine\, the story of intersex fish may be an early warning of the effects that pharmaceuticals are having on the health of our waterways and on the people and organisms that depend on them. \nWHAT CAN WE DO?\nUse the following steps to reduce the risk of long-term human health effects of pharmaceuticals in your water supply: \nPROPER DRUG DISPOSAL\nThe cheapest and easiest way to limit pharmaceutical contamination is to keep drugs from entering our waterways in the first place. Drug take back programs\, public education on proper disposal\, and regulations to limit large-scale medicine flushing at hospitals and nursing facilities are important first steps that can greatly reduce the amount of contaminants entering our waterways. Some states and counties have begun to experiment with take-back programs. For example\, Washington State collected and disposed of over 15\,000 pounds of unwanted medications during a two year pilot program. \nRESEARCH\nAdditional research is needed to assess potential human health effects and identify the best methods for removing pharmaceutical compounds at treatment plants. If there is a significant long-term risk to public health\, more aggressive efforts to control the problem may be needed. \nLONG-TERM SOLUTIONS\nWhile proper disposal can limit pharmaceutical contamination\, more work on source control will ultimately be needed in addition to upgrading treatment infrastructure and reassessing our approach to use and dispose of pharmaceuticals and personal care products.

SUMMARY:Alligators Eat Fruit?
DESCRIPTION:Alligators are apex predators that also eat fruit. \nAlligators are carnivorous opportunists\, eating fish\, amphibians\, reptiles\, birds\, and mammals. What they eat is largely determined by their size. However\, they were recently reported to also eat fruit such as wild grapes\, elderberries\, and citrus fruits directly from trees. Alligators may help spread the seeds of these fruits throughout their habitats.

SUMMARY:Just Say No To Plastic Bags!
DESCRIPTION:JUST SAY NO TO PLASTIC BAGS\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlastic bags are from the same source as all plastic: crude oil. Like everything else manufactured from this non-renewable resource\, it has two major drawbacks: manufacturing it emits considerable amounts of pollution\, and the product is not biodegradable. In other words\, it is difficult to produce\, and nearly impossible to get rid of once produced. According to the Natural Environment website\, 60 to 100 million barrels of oil are required to manufacture a year’s worth of plastic bags worldwide\, and it takes approximately 400 years at least for a bag to biodegrade. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nImpact\n\n\n\n\n\nThe impact of plastic bags on the environment is enormous. As of August 2010\, between 500 billion and 1 trillion plastic bags are being used each year worldwide. Approximately 100\,000 sea turtles and other marine animals die every year because they either mistake the bags for food or get strangled in them\, says Natural Environment. In Australia\, 50 million garbage bags end up as litter yearly\, and the “plastic soup” patch floating in the Pacific Ocean is twice the size of the continental United States. It is roughly 80 percent plastic\, according to The Independent\, a British newspaper. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEffects\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat exactly the impact of reusable bag usage in the U.S. is far from clear. Even though\, according to the website Earth 911\, reusing or recycling one ton of plastic means the equivalent of 11 barrels of oil are saved\, the argument sounds hollow when you consider once the bags exist\, they are here to stay. You can recycle them into anything you want\, but ultimately\, they will be discarded. Whether in the form of purses crocheted from Target plastic bags or as doggie-doo bags\, plastic always remains plastic. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlternatives\n\n\n\n\n\nEvery U.S. grocery chain carries cheap reusable grocery bags as of August 2010\, ranging from 99 cents to about $5. More upscale bags are available in practically all chain stores\, from bookstores like Borders to Whole Foods. In addition\, many people sew their own from leftover fabric\, or by converting old jeans or beach towels into personalized carry-on bags\, which is a fun and creative way to recycle. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPotential\n\n\n\n\n\nWhile some governments are taking steps to reign in plastic bags or ban them outright\, other countries are seriously lagging behind. In 2008\, China started to ban stores from offering free plastic bags; previously\, China had been using 3 billion plastic bags a day\, according to Treehugger. One of the most substantial efforts has taken place in Ireland\, where a tax has been issued on each plastic bag. Paying the equivalent of 20 cents tax per plastic bag used in a store has led to a 95 percent decrease in usage.

SUMMARY:We are proud to be LEED!
DESCRIPTION:Wekiva Island is proud to have a LEED Platinum Building. Our classroom building was the first LEED Platinum Building in Seminole County.\n\nTHIS is LEED\nBETTER BUILDINGS ARE OUR LEGACY. \nWHAT IS LEED?\nThe LEED plaque on a building is a mark of quality and achievement in green building.\nLeaders across the globe have made LEED the most widely used green building rating system in the world with 1.85 million square feet of construction space certifying every day. LEED certification provides independent verification of a building or neighborhood’s green features\, allowing for the design\, construction\, operations and maintenance of resource-efficient\, high-performing\, healthy\, cost-effective buildings. LEED is the triple bottom line in action\, benefiting people\, planet and profit. \n\n\n\nWHY LEED?\nLEED certification means healthier\, more productive places\, reduced stress on the environment by encouraging energy and resource-efficient buildings\, and savings from increased building value\, higher lease rates and decreased utility costs. LEED-certified buildings will directly contribute $29.8 billion to U.S. GDP by 2018. \n\n\n\nIn the U.S.\, buildings account for:\n\n\n\n38%\nOf all CO2 emissions \n  \n\n\n13.6%\nOf all potable water (15 trillion gal. / year) \n\n\n73%\nOf U.S. electricity consumption \n\n\n\nLEED projects are responsible for diverting over 80 million tons of waste from landfills. Compared to the average commercial building\, LEED Gold buildings in the General Services Administration’s portfolio consume a quarter less energy and generate 34% lower greenhouse gas emissions. \n\n\n\n\nLEED Buildings:\n\n\n\nPROVIDE A COMPETITIVE DIFFERENTIATOR\n61% of corporate leaders believe that sustainability leads to market differentiation and improved financial performance. \n\n\nMAKE FOR HAPPIER EMPLOYEES AND OCCUPANTS\nLEED-certified buildings are demonstrating increased recruitment and retention rates and increased productivity benefits for employers. 2.5 million employees are currently experiencing better indoor environmental quality in LEED buildings. \n\n\nATTRACT TENANTS\nToday’s tenants understand and are looking for the benefits that LEED-certified spaces have to offer. The new Class A office space is green; lease-up rates for green buildings typically range from average to 20% above average. \n\n\nSAVE ENERGY AND RESOURCES\, LOWER OPERATING COSTS\nFrom 2015-2018 LEED-certified buildings are estimated to generate as much as $1.2 billion in energy savings\, $149.5 million in water savings\, $715.3 million in maintenance savings\, and $54.2 million in waste savings. \n\n\nARE COST EFFECTIVE\nA study of 562 PNC bank branches showed that compared to non-LEED-certified facilities\, LEED-certified facilities annually opened up 458 more consumer deposit accounts and had $3\,032\,000 more in consumer deposit balance per facility per year and increased revenue. \n\n\nPROVIDE PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMUNITY BENEFITS\nAdobe Systems\, Inc.\, announced in 2006 that it had received three LEED Platinum awards for its headquarters towers; not only did it reap great publicity\, but the firm showed that it had garnered a net present value return of almost 20 to one on its initial investment. \n\n\nINCREASE RENTAL RATES\nA recent study of the San Diego market showed that the overall vacancy rate for green buildings was 4% lower than for non-green properties — 11.7%\, compared to 15.7% — and that LEED-certified buildings continued to command the highest rents. \n\n\nOPTIMIZE HEALTH\nBy bringing the good in — like clean air and access to daylight — and keeping the bad out—including harmful chemicals found in paints\, finishings and more — LEED creates healthy spaces. Buildings that optimize wellbeing are more important than ever. \n\n\n\nLEED Is Global:\nMore than 79\,000 projects are participating in LEED across 160 countries and territories\, comprising over 15 billion square feet. You’ve seen a LEED plaque before — USGBC estimates that nearly 5 million people experience a LEED building every day. Many of the world’s most well-known buildings have earned LEED certification. \nLEED works with top building professionals around the world to deliver a system that is applicable at the global\, regional and local levels. That means that LEED works no matter where you live — from Seattle\, Washington to Taipei\, Taiwan
