SUMMARY:Is the Wekiva River In Danger?
DESCRIPTION:The Wekiva ecosystem is one of Florida’s most environmentally and economically valuable natural areas. Formed by over 36 known springs\, the 42 mile long Wekiva River system includes the Wekiva\, Rock Springs Run\, the Blackwater Creek\, and the Little Wekiva River. It is a major tributary of the St. Johns River. \nThe 300\,000 acre Wekiva River Basin is one of the most diverse animal and plant communities in Florida. Several state and federally listed species live within the Wekiva River Basin including Florida Black Bears\, Wood Storks\, and Bald Eagles. The Basin also comprises the southern end of one of Florida’s major wildlife corridors connecting the Ocala National Forest to the Wekiva River. \nDue to its ecological and economic significance\, the Wekiva River has extensive legal protections. It is designated as an Outstanding Florida Waterway\, both a state and federal Wild and Scenic River\, and is protected by two major pieces of state legislation. Some 110 square miles in the basin are protected in public ownership as parks\, preserves and state forests. \nTragically\, the Wekiva River and the springs which feed it remain significantly impaired in terms of both water quality and quantity. According to the Center for Earth Jurisprudence\, although Minimum Flows and Levels have been set for the Wekiva since 1994\, three of the eight springs with specific minimum flow requirements have levels below this threshold\, three are projected to fall below by 2030\, and two are unmonitored. For example\, Wekiwa Springs should be flowing at more than 40 million gallons per day\, however average flow in 2012 was below 35 million gallons per day. Reduced springs flows degrade the ecosystem for both natural and recreational uses. \nIn addition\, Wekiva’s springs have experienced increased concentrations of nitrates and phosphorous leading to algal blooms that damage the ecosystem for wildlife and humans. The three major springs in the Wekiva River have reported an average nitrate concentration 480% higher than the 2008 Total Maximum Daily Load requirements. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection recently concluded that 67% of all nitrates entering the Wekiva River come from residential and agriculture fertilizer and septic tanks. As a result\, both major headsprings—Rock Springs and Wekiwa—have been designated as “Impaired” by the Department of Environmental Protection. \nThe Wekiva ecosystem has become degraded and faces future peril from the consequences of a rapidly growing population\, failing septic tanks\, wasteful water and fertilizer use by residents and agriculture\, and ineffective implementation of public policy. As threats to our water quality and supply increase\, the environmental and economic consequences of inaction grow as well.

SUMMARY:Have you seen our Dr. Seuss Collection?
DESCRIPTION:Displayed in our LEED Platinum Schoolhouse Building:\nDr. Seuss’s COLLECTION OF\nUNORTHODOX TAXIDERMY\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe fledgling Springfield Zoo was a beloved part of Dr. Seuss’s childhood. If his father wasn’t able to accompany him and his sketchpad there\, he would go with his mother or his sister\, Marnie. Only later\, when Ted’s dad became the superintendent of parks\, did he also become an unexpected resource\, who now aided and abetted his son’s artistic efforts. Zoo animals that had met their demise lived on as their bills\, horns\, and antlers were shipped to Ted’s New York apartment to become exotic beaks and headdresses on his bizarre taxidermy sculptures. \nThe result was an astounding 17 sculptures—created during the 1930s—which remain today as some of the finest examples of his inventive and multidimensional creativity. Marnie\, who from the beginning had witnessed the genesis of sculptures for The Seuss System of Unorthodox Taxidermy\, described Ted’s home and its “occupants” on November 28\, 1937 for The Springfield Union: “They have a charming apartment on Park Avenue\, New York\, but it is so filled with his animals that I am apt to have a nightmare whenever I visit them.” On the other hand\, the June 7\, 1938\, issue of Look magazine dubbed Ted Geisel “The World’s Most Eminent Authority on Unheard-Of Animals.” \nDr. Seuss’s inimitable Collection of Unorthodox Taxidermy will\, unquestionably\, continue to be one of the most sought-after gems from his diamond mine of artistic treasures.

SUMMARY:How fast can an alligator swim?
DESCRIPTION:Alligators also use water to hunt. On land they are awkward\, but in the water they can swim very quickly using their tails. This makes it easier for them to catch prey. American alligators can swim up to 20 mph (32.18 km/h) and run on land as fast as 11 mph (17.7 km/h)\, according to the San Diego Zoo.

SUMMARY:Live Music In The Tooting Otter by Cat Ridgeway
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy live music in The Tooting Otter with Cat Ridgeway! \n\n\n\n  \nHailing from Orlando\, Florida\, Cat Ridgeway is a skilled songwriter who can write in any genre. Cat’s eclectic\, soulful style shines through her ability to play guitar and harmonica\, trumpet\, trombone\, drums\, piano\, and bass. \nIn the last year alone\, Cat has established herself as a true up-and-comer. She and her band opened the main stage at Okeechobee Music and Arts Festival for Trombone Shorty\, Arcade Fire\, Leon Bridges\, Local Natives\, and Lil Dicky\, and just months later went on to their debut performance at the House of Blues Orlando to an extremely responsive crowd. As a solo act\, Cat also played the Wire and Wood Alpharetta Songwriters Festival with the likes of Robert Randolph and the Family Band\, Justin Townes Earle\, Dan Wilson (of Semisonic)\, and Glenn Phillips (of Toad the Wet Sprocket) where she quickly became a crowd favorite. A foreshadow to this year’s success\, Cat won indie rock duo Tegan and Sara’s world wide cover contest in 2016. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCat’s project “Passenger Seat” was the direct result of her overfunded Kickstarter campaign “Cat Goes to Nashville”. She had the privilege of working with the likes of Gordon Kennedy (co-writer of “Change the World” recorded by Eric Clapton) and many other seasoned Nashville players on the EP. Cat’s most recent single “Whiskey Lullabies” was recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis\, TN and features Gregg Allman’s horn section. \nAlthough it ultimately didn’t make the final cut\, Cat’s debut album “On a Windy Day” features the title track originally written for the major motion picture\, “Bernie” starring Jack Black\, Shirley MacLaine and Matthew McConaughey. Cat has lent her voice to many notable causes including Tunes for Tots\, Make A Wish Foundation\, and Hospice of the Comforter. She is also highly sought after by advertising agencies to sing radio jingles and commercials.
