Most Central Floridians know it: On those sweltering summer days, there’s nothing like a dip in a cool, refreshing natural spring. But because they’re such go-tos in the summer, the springs can fill up fast during the hotter months—including us here at Wekiva island!
To help out, we’ve put together a “survival guide” to help you get the most out of your experience at Wekiva Island this summer.
1. Arrive early or book your spot
The beautiful Florida weather brings everyone outdoors, and summertime at The Island is no different. Wekiva Island summers are busy, especially on the weekends. If you’re looking to spend the day with us, set your alarm clock a little earlier. We fill up fast, so plan to arrive before 10 a.m. to save your seat. Even better? Come out during the week and have a little more room to roam, or stop by for happy hour or one of our fun nightly events for a different experience. Want to reserve a space for your group? Consider booking one of our awesome cabanas to serve as your home base throughout your day. They provide two reserved parking spots, a covered area with seating, and storage for food and non-alcoholic beverages during your stay. Book early, though! Just like the Island, our river-banas are extremely popular on the weekends and often book up.
2. Carpool
We’re always looking to make your life easier and a little more fun. That’s why we suggest carpooling. During peak months, The Island can fill up before 10 a.m.! If you want a better chance at getting your whole gang together, make sure to ride in one car. Not only will you be helping each other out, but you’ll also be supporting the environment. Less cars means less pollution—that’s something we can all get behind!
3. Be wildlife aware
We share our river with many native species. Common animals spotted by kayakers, paddleboarders, canoers and swimmers include: turtles, alligators, otters and deer. We are lucky to have such diverse wildlife in our backyard, but remember, we are just visitors in their homes. Feel free to explore, but we recommend avoiding where they may be living and relaxing like lily pads or marshes.
4. Stay hydrated
The average high in Orlando during summer is in the 90s, but Floridians know it can feel much hotter! So, it’s important to stay hydrated while you’re enjoying the river. Bring an empty water bottle to fill up at The Tooting Otter Craft Beer & Wine Bar, or purchase a refreshing beverage there. And don’t forget to fuel up, too! Island life on an empty stomach is never the way to go. Without a Paddle Café provides some delicious eats on-site.
5. Forget something? No worries!
Planning the perfect day can be hard, and everyone forgets things sometimes. That’s why we have our General Store. It has all the essentials for a fun day soaking up the rays. Whether its Costa Del Mar sunglasses, sunscreen, bug spray or even a colorful float, we have all the ingredients for a successful day in the sun.
