Wekiva Island to host seafood boil to benefit Central Florida Zoo

ORLANDO, Fla. (September 21, 2023) — Visitors to Wekiva Island might have been lucky enough to see the occasional river otter swimming around in the Wekiva River. Now, they’ll have the chance to help out the species right in its own habitat.

Wekiva Island will host a seafood boil fundraiser to benefit the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens on Saturday, Oct. 21. The event will last from 3 to 7 p.m. For $40, guests will receive a delicious seafood boil meal with a pound of shrimp, clams, corn, sausage and potatoes, plus three pours of their favorite 3 Daughters Brewing beers.

The fundraiser is meant to kick off Wekiva Island’s sponsorship of the otter habitat at the Zoo. While guests are feeding themselves an otter-inspired meal, they’ll also be helping fund dinner for Molly, the otter at the Zoo, for the year.

“We love the Central Florida Zoo, and we have held various events in the past to support our awesome Seminole County neighbor,” said Carrie Vanderhoef, Wekiva Island manager and Zoo board member. “We’re excited to kick off our larger partnership with this fun event and look forward to raising enough money to feed Molly all year long.”

In addition to top-notch food and drink, attendees can enjoy live music from Joseph Martens and Doc Hibbard. Families can bring the kids out to enjoy up-close encounters with Zoo animal ambassadors from 3 to 5 p.m.

A percentage of the event’s funds will go directly to the Zoo, and there will be a silent auction and 50/50 raffles with 100 percent of proceeds benefitting the Zoo.
