When it Comes to Sustainability, Wekiva Island “LEEDs” the Way!

Wekiva Island means business when it comes to our mission, and our passion for sustainability drives those efforts. It means so much that we had the toolbox that helps us work toward our goals trademarked – C.E.R.O.™ (which stands for conservation, efficiency, renewables and offsets).

Did you know our Classroom is LEED Platinum certified and is the only one of its kind in Seminole County? Our Classroom captures the efficiency status with the premium in building design — LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). LEED, the most widely used green building rating system in the world, provides a framework to create highly efficient and cost-saving green buildings and is the true mark of sustainability achievement.

You can see it for yourself next time you visit us. The Classroom is geothermally powered right from the wild and scenic Wekiva River, which is a constant 72 degrees! Our solar units on the bridge and boat stalls as you enter the Classroom provide a high level of efficiency. The repurposed wood for the Classroom’s walls and ceilings is reminiscent of our own history (taken from the old Wekiva Marina boat stalls and bridge). To finish it off, all lights are LED, which produce 90 percent more efficiency than incandescent light bulbs.

Through ongoing education, we also stay abreast of the latest in sustainability design.  The U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) 3^rd annual Sustainability Hospitality Summit was just held in Orlando last month, where industry experts focused on the hospitality footprint: resilient design strategies, reducing carbon emissions and waste, creating healthy communities and prioritizing human capital.

The Classroom is just one example of how our passion drives our mission. Wekiva Island makes it happen.
